For Darwen
The For Darwen Party was a local political party in Darwen, south of Blackburn, England, with a platform that Darweners were not properly represented on Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council. Founded in 2007, the party had three Borough Councillors following the May elections and five in 2008. Councillors included former members of the Liberal Democrats, England First Party and the BNP. They formed a coalition administration with the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives from 2007 to 2010, and successfully campaigned for the creation of Darwen Town Council in 2009, on which they won seven seats. In 2010 they suffered three defections and Labour regained control of the Borough Council. By 2012 For Darwen had lost all their seats and the party folded in 2014, most of the remaining membership joining UKIP. Rishton
Rishton is a town in the Hyndburn district of Lancashire, England, about west of Clayton-le-Moors and north east of Blackburn. It was an urban district from about 1894 to 1974. The population at the census of 2011 was 6,625. History Its name means “village (or farmstead) where rushes grow”. In late 1776, a handloom weavers shop in Rishton, belonging to Thomas Duxbury may have been the first place that the cotton cloth calico was woven for sale in Great Britain. Rishton Colliery on the Burnley Coalfield was begun by P.W. Pickup Ltd in late November 1884 and mining continued until 1941. A tramroad from the pit connected to a coaling wharf on the canal. The National Coal Board used it as a pumping station from 1955 until 1970. Darwen Town Hall is a municipal building in Croft Street, Darwen, Lancashire, England. It is the meeting place of Darwen Town Council. History After significant population growth in the second half of the 19th century, particularly associated with the textile industry, Darwen became a municipal borough in March 1878. Civic leaders decided it was necessary to procure a town hall and a market hall: the original concept was to have two separate structures but after some debate civic leaders decided to have a combined facility. The site they selected was a piece of derelict and marshy land traversed by the River Darwen and owned by the Reverend Charles Greenway. The scheme was subject to a design competition which was supervised by Alfred Waterhouse and won by Charles Bell.
