Association football has been a part of Basque Country culture since the end of the 19th century. As of 2021, three Basque teams play in La Liga, the top division of the Spanish football system: Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad and Deportivo Alavés. History Early years Modern football was introduced to the Basque Country in the late 19th century by a combination of mostly British immigrant workers, visiting sailors and Spanish students returning from Britain. Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players who primarily use their feet to propel the ball around a rectangular field called a pitch. The objective of the game is to score more goals than the opposition by moving the ball beyond the goal line into a rectangular framed goal defended by the opposing side. Traditionally, the game has been played over two 45 minute halves, for a total match time of 90 minutes. 1894 Bilbao Students V British Workers Football Match
The 1894 Bilbao students v British workers was a football match that took place at the Hippodrome of Lamiako, Leioa, on 3 May 1894. The match was contested by a group of Bilbainos who challenged the British residents in Bilbao to a football match, which at the time was a relatively unknown sport in Spain. The game was won comfortably by the British 5–0, but most important than the result was its historical significance, as it was probably one of the first ‘international’ matches in the history of the sport. Hippodrome Of Lamiako
The Limiako Hippodrome, or the Hippodrome of Lamiako, was a sports venue based in the neighborhood of Leioa, Biscay, Basque Country. Originally an equestrian venue, it's now best remembered as a historic football venue. The Campo de Lamiako played a pivotal role in the early steps of football in the Basque Country as one of the first football fields in the city, serving as a practice ground for the city’s first known football matches between the members of the ''Club Atleta'' of the Nervión Shipyards. A football pitch (also known as soccer field) is the playing surface for the game of association football. Its dimensions and markings are defined by Law 1 of the Laws of the Game, "The Field of Play". The pitch is typically made of natural turf or artificial turf, although amateur and recreational teams often play on dirt fields. Artificial surfaces are allowed only to be green in colour. All line markings on the pitch form part of the area which they define. For example, a ball on or above the touchline is still on the field of play, and a foul committed over the line bounding the penalty area results in a penalty. Alfred Mills (footballer)
Alfred Edward Elvin Mills (15 December 1874 - 15 October 1929) was an English footballer who played as a defender for Spanish club Athletic Club. He is best known for being the only foreigner between the 33 founders of the club, the ‘Inglés en Bilbao’. Mills was one of the most important footballers in the amateur beginnings of Athletic Club, co-founding the club and then serving the club as a board member and a captain, winning the 1904 Copa del Rey.
