Football Tasmania
Football Tasmania (FT) is the governing body for soccer in the Australian state of Tasmania. The federation oversees competitions across Tasmania, Tasmanian representative teams, and development of the sport in the state. The federation was known as the Tasmanian Soccer Association until 1996, when it was renamed to Soccer Tasmania. In line with national changes in March 2006, it became Football Federation Tasmania. In February 2019, the organisation became simply Football Tasmania. Football Tasmania sanctions all competitive football matches in Tasmania, either directly in the case of its own leagues, or indirectly, as is the case with local regional junior associations. FT also trains and appoints match officials in accordance with FIFA guidelines. KGV Park
KGV Park, or simply KGV (King George V) is home to Football Federation Tasmania, the governing body for association football in Tasmania, and home to the Glenorchy Knights football team. It is referred to as the Home of Football in Tasmania. It is located in the heart of Glenorchy less than 1 kilometre from the Glenorchy CBD, 7 kilometres from Hobart City. Current use KGV is home to the Glenorchy Knights football club who play home matches in the NPL Tasmania and lower grades at the ground. It is also used for all major football matches played in the South of Tasmania, including Statewide Cup Finals and Statewide Finals Series Matches. In 2010, A-League side Central Coast Mariners played a Tasmanian representative side in front of a crowd of around 2,000 people. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. The Second Boer War ( af, Tweede Vryheidsoorlog, , 11 October 189931 May 1902), also known as the Boer War, the Anglo–Boer War, or the South African War, was a conflict fought between the British Empire and the two Boer Republics (the South African Republic and the Orange Free State) over the Empire's influence in Southern Africa from 1899 to 1902. Following the discovery of gold deposits in the Boer republics, there was a large influx of "foreigners", mostly British from the Cape Colony. Sandy Bay FC
Sandy Bay Soccer Club was a football (soccer) club which represented Sandy Bay in the Tasmanian Southern Premier League from 1922 until its demise in 1953. In their 31-year history Sandy Bay established itself as a powerhouse club of Tasmanian football, winning a remarkable seven state championships, and seven southern premierships which still sees them placed fourth on the winners lists of both competitions despite folding over 50 years ago. Their great rivalry with neighbours South Hobart was a feature of Tasmanian football competitions before World War II, and their demise was regretted by all associated with the club. Queens Domain
The Queens Domain, also known as The Domain to locals, is a small hilly area of bushland just north-east of the CBD of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, alongside the Derwent River. It is traditionally land that "belongs to the people", as commissioned by the Governor in 1860. On the side of the hill facing the river sits Government House, one of the finest in the Commonwealth of Nations, and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. Nearby was the original location of the now closed Hobart Zoo. Anglesea Barracks
Anglesea Barracks is an Australian Defence Force barracks in central Hobart, Tasmania. The site was chosen in December 1811 by Lachlan Macquarie and construction began on the first buildings to occupy the site in 1814. It is the oldest Australian Army barracks still in use and celebrated its bicentenary in December 2011. Despite the small variation in spelling it was named after Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey who was involved with the Board of Ordnance. Colonial Forces Of Australia
Until Australia became a Federation in 1901, each of the six colonies were responsible for their own defence. From 1788 until 1870 this was done with British regular forces. In all, 24 British infantry regiments served in the Australian colonies. Each of the Australian colonies gained responsible government between 1855 and 1890, and while the Colonial Office in London retained control of some affairs, and the colonies were still firmly within the British Empire, the Governors of the Australian colonies were required to raise their own colonial militia.
