Flora, Suriname
Flora is a resort in Suriname, located in the Paramaribo District. Its population at the 2012 census was 19,538. Flora is both the name of the resort and the neighbourhood within the resort. Flora was founded as a wood Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. Suriname is divided into 10 districts ( nl, districten). Overview History The country was first divided up into subdivisions by the Netherlands, Dutch on October 8, 1834, when a Royal Decree declared that there were to be 8 divisions and 2 districts: *Upper Suriname and Torarica *Para *Upper Commewijne *Upper Cottica and Perica *Lower Commewijne *Lower Cottica *Matapica *Saramacca *Coronie (district) *Nickerie (district) The divisions were areas near the capital city, Paramaribo, and the districts were areas further away from the city. Paramaribo District
Paramaribo is a district of Suriname, encompassing the capital city of Paramaribo and the surrounding area. Paramaribo district has a population of 240,924, almost half the population of the entire country, and an area of 182 km2. The area was first colonised by the British in the 17th century with the construction of Fort Willoughby. This fort was later taken by the Netherlands and renamed Fort Zeelandia. The area, and the city of Paramaribo, switched between Dutch and British control until the Treaty of Breda at the end of the Second Anglo-Dutch War ceded all of Suriname to the Dutch. Boeroes
Dutch Surinamese ( nl, Boeroes) are Surinamese people of Dutch descent. Dutch migrant settlers in search of a better life started arriving in Suriname in the 19th century with the ''boeroes'', poor farmers arriving from the Dutch provinces of Gelderland, Utrecht, and Groningen.''America Desde Otra Frontera. La ''Guayana Holandesa'' - Surinam : 1680-1795'', Ana Crespo Solana. Furthermore, the Surinamese ethnic group, the Creoles, persons of mixed African-European ancestry, are partially of Dutch descent. Many Dutch settlers left Suriname after independence in 1975, which diminished the white Dutch population. Currently there are around 1000 boeroes left in Suriname, and 3000 outside Suriname. Ietje Paalman-de Miranda
Aïda Beatrijs “Ietje” Paalman-de Miranda (20 February 1936 – 11 May 2020) was a Surinamese-born Dutch mathematician and full professor. She was born in Uitvlugt, Paramaribo. When she was 17 years old she moved from Suriname to the Netherlands to study mathematics at the University of Amsterdam. In that era it was very unusual to study mathematics and she was the only woman at the faculty. She graduated cum laude on 23 November 1960. She started a PhD with Johannes de Groot as her supervisor. She defended her PhD thesis "Topological Semigroups" and obtained her degree in 1960, also cum laude. In 1980 she became full professor in pure mathematics, becoming the first female full professor of mathematics in Amsterdam. Research Paalman's research was foremost in topology and set theory.
