Flintshire Freeze
Flintshire Freeze were a Welsh ice hockey team that play in the English National Ice Hockey League, north division. They played their games at Deeside Leisure Centre, Flintshire. They won the North League championship in the 2003/2004 season. After the re-design of the ENIHL after the 2007/08 season, the Freeze played in the North 2 conference. In 2012 the team were dissolved and replaced by a reformed Deeside Dragons. Queensferry, Flintshire
Queensferry ( cy, Fferi Buddug / Fferi Isaf) is a town, community and electoral ward in Flintshire, Wales, lying on the River Dee near the border. The community includes the village of Sandycroft. It is between Connah's Quay, Shotton and Saltney Ferry. Queensferry is also part of the wider Deeside conurbation. Description Its name derives from the ferries that crossed the River Dee. The settlement of Higher Ferry ( cy, Y Fferi Uchaf) is now known as Saltney, while Queensferry was named Lower Ferry ( cy, Y Fferi Isaf). English National Ice Hockey League
The National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) is a set of professional ice hockey leagues administered by the English Ice Hockey Association. It is currently the second tier of British ice hockey, below the Elite Ice Hockey League. Formerly called the English National Ice Hockey League (ENIHL), it was renamed in 2012 to recognise the inclusion of several teams from Scotland and Wales. The English Ice Hockey Association announced a new structure of the men's senior league for the 2019/20 season, at a meeting of NIHL clubs in Warwickshire. A new ten-team division was approved to sit above the existing Division 1 in North and South, to be known as the National League. Deeside Leisure Centre
Deeside Leisure Centre is a sports centre located in Queensferry, Flintshire. Its facilities include Deeside Ice Rink (an Olympic-sized inline hockey rink), badminton courts, and squash courts. The centre was the venue for the 1974 Wightman Cup match. The ice rink is the National Centre for Ice Sports in Wales and is home to the Deeside Dragons, thFlintshire Phantomsand the Deeside Demons ice hockey teams. It was used as a temporary home by the Manchester Phoenix during the 2006–07 EIHL season while the Altrincham Ice Dome was being constructed. The Phoenix moved back to Deeside for the 2015/16 Season after they were evicted from Altrincham by the rink's owners. There has also been a new indoor skate park and gym added to the Leisure Centre. Deeside Dragons
Aspray Chester Deeside Dragons are a Welsh ice hockey team that play in the National Ice Hockey League, north division. They play their games at Deeside Leisure Centre, Flintshire, and replaced the previous team Flintshire Freeze. They won the North League championship in the 2015/16 season, with a record of 24-3-1 as well as the 2015/16 Laidler Playoffs. For the 2022/23 season the club has Aspray Chester as the clubs title sponsor. The 2022/23 season see's the return of ice hockey to North Wales for the first time in over 2 years, due to the ice rink being used as a field hospital and later a vaccination centre for North East Wales. Dave Clancy
Dave Clancy (born 9 September 1978) is an English ice hockey goaltender, who most recently played for the Flintshire Freeze in the ENL. Clancy began his career playing at deeside junior ice hockey club. Then worked his way up to play some games for the senior team. He then left the club to go and play for the Altrincham Tigers at Under-19 level. He backstopped the Tigers to a national tournament win in Cardiff, claiming the 'Goalie of the Tournament' award along the way. Clancy was also selected for the Team G.B. U-20 squad the same year, but was unavailable to travel with the squad. After spending time with the Flintshire Freeze, and establishing himself as their first choice goaltender, Clancy signed for the Manchester Phoenix in the summer of 2003. Matt Compton
Matt Compton (born 29 December 1983) is an English professional ice hockey player, currently playing for the Flintshire Freeze in the ENHL. Compton began playing at a higher standard in 2000, when he kept goal for the Deeside Avalanche at U-19 level, making 11 appearances in his first year and maintaining a save percentage of over 87%. He would move on to sign for the Flintshire Freeze, a Welsh team playing in the ENHL. Compton would remain with Flintshire for the next four seasons, and featured regularly throughout each term. During his first spell with Flintshire, his save percentage was never allowed to drop below 85%, and one season was as high as 91%. Compton's talent as a goaltender led to his move North for the 2005/06 season, signing with the Blackburn Hawks. Compton was the Hawks' starting goaltender, and played 40 games with a goals against average of 2.7 goals per game. Marc Lovell
Marc Lovell (born 2 June 1982 in Chester, England) is an English professional ice hockey player, currently playing for the Flintshire Freeze in the English National Ice Hockey League. Lovell began his career in 2002 after having been encouraged by watching the Deeside Dragons. After teaching himself to skate, and then play to a reasonable standard, he began to play for the Telford Wild Foxes in the English Premier Ice Hockey League. His first season was an excellent one, and in 33 games scored 14 goals and 12 assists as well as totalling 34 penalty minutes. He would start the following 2003/04 season as a WildFox, but was quickly signed up by the Manchester Phoenix, a newly established team icing in the Elite Ice Hockey League, the highest standard of club hockey in the United Kingdom.
