Background and release The band collaborated with the Japanese noise artist Merzbow, who mixed tracks 3 and 4, and a recording of the two performing together at the 2007 Earthdom Festival in Tokyo was added for a 2007 2CD reissue in Japan. Southern Lord released this version as a download on Bandcamp in 2013. The French label Bisect Bleep Industries released the first pressings of the 2LP version in 2002 (200 copies on black vinyl, 150 on red, 150 on clear), with the bonus track "Grimm & Bear It", which was recorded live at Gaba in Los Angeles in 1998. Southern Lord remastered and re-released this version (800 copies on gold & black splatter vinyl for Record Store Day 2020's third drop, 500 on gold) in 2020. ''The Grimmrobe Demos'' is Sunn O)))'s first recorded album and is the most direct representation of its self-proclaimed Earth-worship. It was originally limited to 500 copies by Hydra Head Records but, in 2005, Southern Lord Records reissued it on CD and vinyl with a bonus live track. An early rehearsal track titled "Bremerton" was included on the vinyl release. The album's third track was named after frontman Dylan Carlson of the band Earth and is a loose interpretation of the track "Ouroboros is Broken" from Earth's first release, '' Extra-Capsular Extraction''. Merzbow
is a Japanese noise project started in 1979 by , best known for a style of harsh, confrontational noise. Since 1980, Akita has released over 400 recordings and has collaborated with various artists. The name Merzbow comes from the German dada artist Kurt Schwitters' artwork ''Merzbau'', in which Schwitters transformed the interior of his house using found objects. The name was chosen to reflect Akita's dada influence and junk art aesthetic. In addition to this, Akita has cited a wide range of musical influences from progressive rock, heavy metal, free jazz, and early electronic music to non-musical influences like dadaism, surrealism and fetish culture.
