Flamingo Gardens
Flamingo Gardens is a , is a botanical garden and wildlife sanctuary, located just west of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and north of Miami at 3750 South Flamingo Road, Davie, Florida, United States. It is open to the public for a fee. History The Gardens, a tropical oasis in South Florida, were originally the property of Floyd L. and Jane Wray, who in 1927 built a weekend home, citrus grove and laboratory on what was then the edge of the Everglades, where they started a botanical collection of rare and unusual tropicals and subtropical exotics, fruit trees and specimens collected from around the world. The non-profit Floyd L. Wray Memorial Foundation was established to preserve the property and its gardens for future generations. The Wray Home is now a museum illustrating a country home in the early 1930s. Guided tours are provided daily. Florida State Road 823 (SR 823) is a long state highway in the U.S. state of Florida. The road runs from U.S. Route 27 (US 27 or SR 25) in Hialeah to Interstate 595 (I-595 or SR 862) and SR 84 in Davie. The section in Miami-Dade County, through Hialeah and Miami Lakes, is known as Red Road (also known West Fourth Avenue in Hialeah's street grid and West 57th Avenue in the countywide grid). In Broward County, the road turns northwest and merges into Flamingo Road, until its terminus in Davie, though the road continues without designation into Sunrise. ''Clausena lansium'', also known as wampee or wampi, from Cantonese wong4 pei4-2 gwo2 (黄皮果, yellow-skinned fruit) (''Clausena wampi''), is a species of strongly scented evergreen trees 3–8 m tall, in the family Rutaceae, native to southeast Asia. Its leaves are smooth and dark green. White flowers in late March are white, with four or five petals, about 3–4 mm in diameter. The fruit is oval, about 3 cm long and 2 cm in diameter, and contains two to five seeds that occupy ~40-50% of the fruit volume. The tree reaches a maximum height of 20 meters. It grows well in tropical or subtropical conditions, and is susceptible to cold. Wampee trees grow well in a wide range of soil, but will grow best in rich loam. The wampee is cultivated for its fruit, which is a grape-sized, fragrant citrus. Its skin and seeds are often eaten alongside the pulp, much like kumquat. The keel-billed toucan (''Ramphastos sulfuratus''), also known as sulfur-breasted toucan or rainbow-billed toucan, is a colorful Latin American member of the toucan family. It is the national bird of Belize. The species is found in tropical jungles from southern Mexico to Colombia.
