Otto Modersohn
Friedrich Wilhelm Otto Modersohn (22 February 1865, Soest – 10 March 1943, Rotenburg) was a German landscape painter. He was a co-founder of the Art Colony at Worpswede. Life In 1884, he began his studies at the Art Academy of Düsseldorf. Four years later, he moved to the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe, where he studied under Hermann Baisch. In July 1889, he made his first visit to Worpswede with Fritz Mackensen. In August, Hans am Ende followed. They were later joined by Fritz Overbeck (1893) and Heinrich Vogeler (1894); all students from Düsseldorf. In 1895, they presented their first group exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bremen. They were largely panned by the critics, but went on to a major breakthrough at the Munich Glaspalast. In 1897, the Art Colony was officially established and Modersohn married Helene Schröder (1868-1900), the daughter of a Bremen merchant. Clara Westhoff
Clara Westhoff (21 September 1878 in Bremen – 9 March 1954 in Fischerhude), also known as ''Clara Rilke'' or ''Clara Rilke-Westhoff'' was a pioneer German sculptor and artist. She was the wife of poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Early life At 17, Westhoff went to Munich, where she attended a private art school. In 1898 she moved to Worpswede and learned sculpture with Fritz Mackensen. She befriended Paula Becker (later Modersohn-Becker) and Ottilie Reylaender, who were painters there. She continued her studies in 1899 with Carl Seffner and Max Klinger in Leipzig and, in 1900, trained with Auguste Rodin in Paris, also attending the Académie Colarossi.(frMusée d'Orsay/ref> Personal life In 1901 she married the poet Rainer Maria Rilke in Worpswede. Wümme
Wümme () is a river in northern Germany, in the states Lower Saxony and Bremen, marking the border between the two states for part of its course. It is the main headstream of the Lesum. The Wümme's length is . Including the Lesum, that runs into the river Weser, its total length is . The river's source is on the Wulfsberg in Lüneburg Heath. West of Rotenburg, it takes up the rivers Rodau and Wiedau. The Wümme from the left and the Hamme from the right combine near Wasserhorst (part of Blockland in Bremen) forming the Lesum. Verden (district)
Verden () is a ''Kreis'' (district) in the centre of Lower Saxony, Germany. Adjoining it are (from the northwest clockwise) the districts of Osterholz, Rotenburg, Heidekreis, Nienburg, and Diepholz, as well as the city of Bremen. Geography The Aller River enters the district in the east and joins the Weser in the center of the district. In the north, the Wümme River passes from west to the east across the district's territory. The western half of the district is occupied by suburbs in the Bremen metropolitan area, e.g. the town of Achim. History The district dates back to the two '' Ämter'' of Verden and Achim, which were created in 1852 and 1859. After the Kingdom of Hanover became part of Prussia, they were recreated as districts (''Kreis''), and merged in 1932.
