The First Dunstan Ministry was the 49th ministry of the Government of Victoria. It was led by the Premier of Victoria, Albert Dunstan. The ministry was sworn in on 2 April 1935, and was the first National Party of Australia – Victoria, Country Party ministry in the history of Victoria. The Victoria State Government, also referred to as just the Victorian Government, is the state-level authority for Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. Francis Old
Francis Edward Old (24 November 1875 – 19 May 1950) was an Australian politician. He was born in Dingee to farmer Thomas Spear Old and Charlotte Mitchell. He attended state schools at Dingee, and from 1892 was a farmer at Swan Hill. On 27 September 1903, he married Marion Richardson, with whom he had five children. From 1907 to 1919 he was based in Wakool in New South Wales, but from 1919 he returned to Swan Hill while retaining the New South Wales property. He had been involved with the Farmers' and Settlers' Association in New South Wales and served on Wakool Shire Council from 1912–13. Edwin Mackrell
Edwin Joseph Mackrell (16 December 1878 – 24 March 1965) was an Australian politician. He was born in Strathbogie to farmer George Mackrell and Mary Ann Perkins. He attended state school until the age of fourteen, when he began work in a butter factory at Mansfield. By 1896 he was managing a butter factory at Fish Creek. He went to the goldfields in Western Australia in 1901, returning to Victoria in 1905 but travelling to South Africa in 1908. On 15 July 1910 he married Elsie Flora Harris, with whom he had three daughters. He remained in South Africa until 1916, when he returned to farm at first Boho and then, from 1918, Strathbogie. In 1920 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Upper Goulburn, representing the Country Party. Henry Bailey (Australian Politician)
Henry Stephen Bailey (9 September 1876 – 26 July 1962) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1914 to 1932 and from 1935 to 1950, representing the electorates of Port Fairy (1914–27) and Warrnambool (1927–32, 1935–50). Initially an Australian Labor Party member, he served as Minister for Lands and Water Supply in the Prendergast and Hogan governments of 1924, 1927–28 and 1929–32, but was expelled from the party in 1932 during the 1931-32 Labor split and defeated at that year's election. He joined the Country Party in 1934 and won his old seat back for his new party in 1935, subsequently serving as Minister Without Portfolio (1935–36), Minister of Labour (1936), Chief Secretary (1936-43) and Attorney-General (1938–43) in the Dunstan government. Henry Pye
Henry Pye (25 December 1873 – 9 April 1942) was an Australian politician. He was born at Burnewang near Rochester to farmer Edward Pye and Margaret Gorman. At the age of eleven he was apprenticed to a carpenter, and by the age of nineteen owned a building and contracting company. He went to the goldfields in Western Australia, where he built bridges for the railways, before returning to Swan Hill, where he resumed control of his business. Around 1909 he married Alice Maria Jenkins, with whom he had three children. He retired in 1924. From 1917 to 1935 he served on Swan Hill Shire Council, with a term as president from 1931 to 1932. George Tuckett (politician)
George Joseph Tuckett (29 October 1873 – 19 November 1963) was an Australian politician. He was born at Burnt Creek near Dunolly to farmer James Henry Tuckett and Sarah Howard. He became a farmer, and on 27 February 1901 married Margaret Ellen Tobin, with whom he had two children. In around 1929 he moved from Yalca to Nathalia; he also served on the Victorian Wheat Commission and the Water Trust Association of Victoria, and from 1915 to 1946 was on Numurkah Shire Council with three separate terms as president. George Goudie
Sir George Louis Goudie (30 April 1866 – 30 April 1949) was an Australian politician. He was born at Homebush to schoolteacher George Goudie and Caroline Ashton. After attending state schools he acquired a farm at Birchip, and from 1904 also had a share in storekeeping firms. From 1895 to 1910 he served on Birchip Shire Council, with two terms as president from 1898 to 1899 and from 1907 to 1908. On 9 September 1890 he married Alice Maud Watson, with whom he had five sons. In 1910 he moved to Egerton, serving on Ballan Shire Council from 1914 to 1916, when he moved to Hopetoun. From 1917 to 1922 he served on Karkarooc Shire Council. In 1919 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for North Western Province; he was the first representative of the Victorian Farmers' Union, soon to become the Country Party, in that body. John Harris (Victorian Politician)
Sir John Richards Harris (24 January 1868 – 16 September 1946) was an Australian politician. A medical officer in early life, he is also noted as the first producer of sherry in Australia. Life He was born in Chiltern to miner Thomas Henry Harris and Mary Richards Hollow. He attended Grenville College in Ballarat and then the University of Melbourne ( MB 1890, BSc 1891, MD 1902). From 1891 to 1892 he was the resident medical officer at Melbourne Hospital, and from 1892 was based in Rutherglen. Harris served with the Australian Flying Corps during World War I. At Rutherglen he had become a viticulturist, producing the first sherry in Australia in 1912. Albert Bussau
Sir Albert Louis (Lou) Bussau (9 July 18845 May 1947) was a farmer, a Victorian politician and the Victoiran Agent General in London. Early years Bussau was born in Natimuk to carpenter and farmer Johann Joachim Heinrich Adolph Bussau and Maria Ernestina, nee Rokesky. He attended Warracknabeal state school until he was 12 years old when he left to work for his father. With his mothers encouragement studied at night school and then Law by correspondence with the University of Melbourne, becoming an articled clerk. He was employed by a legal firm, J.S.Wright-Smith, attending to business in the Warracknabeal, Beulah and Hopetoun district, travelling by bicycle to visit clients. He was later commissioned to open an office for J. S. Wright-Smith in Hopetoun. Premier Of Victoria
The premier of Victoria is the head of government in the Australian state of Victoria. The premier is appointed by the governor of Victoria, and is the leader of the political party able to secure a majority in the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Responsible government came to the colony of Victoria in 1855. Between 1856 and 1892, the head of the government was commonly called the premier or the prime minister, but neither title had any legal basis. The head of government always held another portfolio, usually Chief Secretary or Treasurer, for which they were paid a salary. The first head of government to hold the title of premier without holding another portfolio was William Shiels in 1892. Premiers of Victoria who have served for more than 3,000 days have a statue installed at Treasury Place.
