Francis Old
Francis Edward Old (24 November 1875 – 19 May 1950) was an Australian politician. He was born in Dingee to farmer Thomas Spear Old and Charlotte Mitchell. He attended state schools at Dingee, and from 1892 was a farmer at Swan Hill. On 27 September 1903, he married Marion Richardson, with whom he had five children. From 1907 to 1919 he was based in Wakool in New South Wales, but from 1919 he returned to Swan Hill while retaining the New South Wales property. He had been involved with the Farmers' and Settlers' Association in New South Wales and served on Wakool Shire Council from 1912–13. The National Party of Australia – Victoria is a political party in Victoria, which forms the state branch of the federal Nationals. Historically, it represented graziers, farmers and rural voters. However, the modern National Party no longer represents these traditional interests; shifting its focus to support the mining industry and as a result, ignoring the challenges faced by rural communities and farmers struggling with the effects of climate change and mining practices such as fracking. The Victorian Farmer's Union formed in 1914 was the precursor to the Victorian Country Party, later the Nationals. John Hipworth
John Alexander Hipworth (18 May 1899 – 9 January 1979) was an Australian politician. He was born in Mathoura in New South Wales to labourer Benjamin Hipworth and Margaret Tully McKenzie. During World War I he was an army instructor, and he was wounded in France in 1917. After the war he farmed near Kerang, and he remained in the military with the 17th Light Horse, becoming commanding officer in 1936. On 17 June 1921 he married Violet Bessie Mapson, with whom he had five children. During World War II he was a lieutenant-colonel. Shortly after his return from the war in 1945, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Country Party member for Swan Hill. He defected to the newly renamed Liberal and Country Party in 1949 and assumed the position of Assistant Minister of Public Works, Housing and Electrical Undertakings, which he held until 1950. Percy Stewart
Percy Gerald Stewart (18 October 1885 – 15 October 1931) was an Australian politician. He was an original member of the Victorian Farmers' Union and long a radical campaigner for farming interests. He helped bring down Stanley Bruce's government in 1929, but died soon after. Early life Stewart was born in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray, Victoria and educated at Yarraville State School. He worked in Melbourne and western Victoria, including a period as a shepherd, and then went to sea. He gained a master's certificate, but gave up sailing after contracting malaria. He then travelled in Europe and Canada before returning to Australia in 1909. In 1913, he selected a block of land in the Mallee at Carwarp, but later sold it and moved to another farm at Carwarp West. In 1916 Stewart married Edith Catherine Roberts. Swan Hill is a city in the northwest of Victoria, Australia on the Murray Valley Highway and on the south bank of the Murray River, downstream from the junction of the Loddon River. The Victorian Farmers' Union (VFU) was an association of farmers and primary producers formed in 1914 in the Australian state of Victoria. Although initially formed as an "absolutely non-political" entity, the VFU became a political party in 1916, and nominated candidates for the 1917 state election and subsequent elections. In later years it used the names Victorian Country Party, then United Country Party and is now the National Party of Australia – Victoria. At the 1917 election, because the support for the VFU was concentrated in rural seats, it won four of the 11 seats in the Victorian Legislative Assembly it contested, gaining about 6% of the vote state-wide. The Electoral district of Swan Hill was a rural Lower House electoral district of the Victorian Parliament. It was located within the Northern Victoria Region of the Legislative Council. The area had previously been part of the electoral districts of Wimmera (1851-89), Crowlands (1858-77), and Donald & Swan Hill (1889-1904). At its beginning in 1904, the district spanned the Victorian Mallee region, covering not only Swan Hill and its surrounds, but also the Mildura area. This changed in 1927, with the creation of the electoral district of Mildura. It was held by a conservative party for its entire existence.
