''Firewire'' is the debut solo studio album by American hip hop artist Lateef the Truthspeaker. It was released via Quannum Projects on November 8, 2011. Recorded over the course of four months in Oakland, California, it includes contributions from DJ Shadow, Lyrics Born, Del the Funky Homosapien, and Dan the Automator. Critical reception D.L. Chandler of ''Okayplayer'' gave the album an 80 out of 100, calling it "an eclectic mix of tracks that showcase Lateef's formidable ability but underwhelms briefly at points." He added, "''Firewire'' may not ignite the senses of every rap fan, but there are enough twists in turns even in its rote moments that keep the listeners engaged over the duration of the album." Mosi Reeves of ''Spin'' gave the album a 6 out of 10, saying, "''Firewire'' is chaotically sequenced, like the Bay Area rapper scoured his hard drive for usable material without checking whether the songs actually blended together logically." Lateef The Truthspeaker
Lateef Daumont, better known by his stage name Lateef the Truthspeaker, or mononymously as Lateef, is a hip hop artist from Oakland, California (United States). He is a member of several hip hop groups such as Latyrx, Lateef and the Chief, and the Mighty Underdogs. He was the founding member of the Solesides collective, which became Quannum Projects. Life and career Lateef was raised in East Oakland, where his father was security detail for the Black Panthers. His mother, a Panther medic, was a roommate and political associate of Angela Davis. He is of African American and Puerto Rican descent. He has released several mixtapes such as ''Ahead of the Curve'' (2007), ''Truth Is Love'' (2009), and ''Truth at Sea'' (2011). Corey Scoffern (born May 20, 1975), better known by his stage name The Grouch, is an American rapper and producer. He is currently based in Maui, Hawaii, but grew up and spent most of his time in the San Francisco Bay Area (specifically Oakland, California). He is a founding member of Living Legends, an underground hip hop collective based in Los Angeles, California. Teren Delvon Jones (born August 12, 1972), better known by his stage name Del the Funky Homosapien (sometimes stylized as Del tha Funkee Homosapien) or Sir DZL, is an American rapper. Tsutomu "Tom" Shimura (born September 2, 1972), better known by his stage name Lyrics Born (formerly Asia Born), is a Japanese-American rapper, singer, and producer. He is one half of the duo Latyrx with Lateef the Truthspeaker. Early life Shimura was born in Tokyo and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah and Berkeley, California. He attended Henry B. Plant High School in Tampa, Florida. Career Shimura changed his stage name from Asia Born to Lyrics Born in 1995, citing the desire to ensure that he won fans based on his merits as a rapper rather than his ethnicity. Okayplayer
Okayplayer is an online hip-hop and alternative music website and community, described by ''Rolling Stone'' as a "tastemaker" and "an antidote to dull promotional Web sites used by most artists". The community was founded by The Roots' drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and author Angela Nissel as a loose musical collective in 1987, and evolved into an online community in 1999. In 2004, Questlove launched Okayplayer Records as a spin-off of the community, in partnership with Decon.
