Firebase Nông Sơn
Firebase Nông Sơn (also known as FSB Nông Sơn, Nông Sơn Combat Base and Nông Sơn Outpost) is a former U.S. Marine Corps fire support base southwest of Da Nang in Quảng Nam Province, Vietnam. History The base was originally established in 1967 by the 5th Marines approximately 40 km southwest of Da Nang to provide security for the nearby Nông Sơn coal mine, the only such facility in South Vietnam. The Marine base was established on and around Nông Sơn mountain, a 200m high hill. At the base of the mountain a reinforced platoon was dug in, a second reinforced platoon occupied the middle level and the third platoon with M40 recoilless rifles and 4.2 inch mortars occupied the mountaintop. On the night of 3/4 July 1967 an estimated 400 People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) attacked the base almost completely overrunning the Marine positions on the summit. The 1st Marine Division (1st MARDIV) is a Marine division of the United States Marine Corps headquartered at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California. It is the ground combat element of the I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF). The Battle of Duc Duc took place from 18 July to 4 October 1974 in Duc Duc District, Quảng Nam Province. The North Vietnamese made some minor territorial gains and suffered heavy losses, while South Vietnamese forces were severely weakened by the fighting. The 3rd Division of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN)—the army of the nation state of South Vietnam that existed from 1955 to 1975—was part of the I Corps that oversaw the northernmost region of South Vietnam, the centre of Vietnam. The Battle of Kham Duc was a major battle of the Vietnam War. The event occurred in Khâm Đức, now district capital of Khâm Đức District, then in Quảng Tín Province (now part of Quảng Nam Province, Vietnam), from 10–12 May 1968. M30 Mortar
The M30 106.7 mm (4.2 inch, or "Four-deuce") heavy mortar is an American rifled, muzzle-loading, high-angle-of-fire weapon used for long-range indirect fire support to infantry units. Design The M30 system weighs including the complete mortar with a welded steel rotator, M24A1 base plate and M53 sight. A point of interest in the design of this mortar is the rifled barrel. A rifled barrel requires the round to be a very tight fit to the bore in order for the rifling to engage the round and impart rotation to it. But, in a muzzle-loading mortar, the round has to be loose enough in the bore to drop in from the front.
