Findlay, OH
Findlay ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Hancock County, Ohio, United States. The second-largest city in Northwest Ohio, Findlay lies about 40 miles (64 km) south of Toledo. The population was 40,313 at the 2020 census. It is home to the University of Findlay and is the principal city of the Findlay, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area. Findlay is the headquarters of Fortune 1000 companies Marathon Petroleum and Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, who rank 22 and 830 on the list respectively. History In the War of 1812, Colonel James Findlay of Cincinnati built a road and a stockade to transport and shelter troops in the Great Black Swamp region. This stockade was named Fort Findlay in his honor. At the conclusion of the war, the community of Findlay was born. Ohio Oil And Gas Production
The petroleum industry in Ohio dates from 1859. Ohio continues to produce significant quantities of oil and gas, having produced more than 1 billion barrels of oil and 9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas since 1860. Unconventional resources, primarily in eastern Ohio, are likely to increase production in Ohio. In late 1859, blacksmith William Jeffrey drilled the first well in Ohio specifically intended to produce petroleum. This well is located in Mecca Township, Trumbull County, northeast of Warren. In 1860, similar activity occurred in Macksburg. The Ohio Oil Rush In 1836, gas was encountered when drilling a ten foot water well in the Findlay field. However, it wasn't until 1884, that a gas well was drilled into the Trenton Limestone, after Dr. Charles Oesterlen organized the Findlay Natural Gas Company. David Ross Locke
David Ross Locke (also known by his pseudonym Petroleum V. Nasby) (September 20, 1833February 15, 1888) was an American journalist and early political commentator during and after the American Civil War. Biography Early life Locke was born in Vestal, Broome County, New York, the son of Nathaniel Reed Locke and Hester Locke. Career He was apprenticed at age 12 to the newspaper, the ''Democrat'' in Cortland County, New York. Following a seven-year apprenticeship, he tramped around until his next protracted stay, with the '' Pittsburgh Chronicle''. Around 1855, Locke started, with others, the Plymouth, Ohio ''Herald.'' On March 20, 1856, he became the editor of the ''Bucyrus Journal''. By 1861 he had purchased and was the editor of ''The Jeffersonian'' in Findlay, Ohio, where he began writing his Nasby letters. Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad was a network of clandestine routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early- to mid-19th century. It was used by enslaved African Americans primarily to escape into free states and Canada. The network was assisted by abolitionists and others sympathetic to the cause of the escapees. The enslaved persons who risked escape and those who aided them are also collectively referred to as the "Underground Railroad". Various other routes led to Mexico, where slavery had been abolished, and to islands in the Caribbean that were not part of the slave trade. An earlier escape route running south toward Florida, then a Spanish possession (except 1763–1783), existed from the late 17th century until approximately 1790.
