Fighting Maroons
The UP Fighting Maroons are the collegiate varsity teams of the University of the Philippines, primarily off Diliman, which play in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the premiere sports league in the country. The Fighting Maroons moniker, though, is more commonly used to refer to the men's basketball team (see Team monikers below). History UAAP Founding Member UP is one of the founding members (1938) of the UAAP. It was also a founding member and the originator of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the year 1924. UP was a perennial contender for the overall championship in the UAAP. The team last won the UAAP Seniors (now referred to as Collegiate) Overall Championship in the 1997–1998 season, two years before the University last hosted the competitions prior to its centennial. Baybayin
(, ''pre-kudlít'': , ''virama-krus-kudlít'': , ''virama-pamudpod'': ; also formerly commonly incorrectly known as alibata) is a Philippine script. The script is an abugida belonging to the family of the Brahmic scripts. Geographically, it was widely used in Luzon and other parts of the Philippines prior to and during the 16th and 17th centuries before being replaced by the Latin alphabet during the period of Spanish colonization. It was used in the Tagalog language and, to a lesser extent, Kapampangan-speaking areas; its use spread to the Ilocanos in the early 17th century. In the 19th and 20th centuries, survived and evolved into multiple forms—the Tagbanwa script of Palawan, and the Hanuno'o and Buhid scripts of Mindoro—and was used to create the constructed modern Kulitan script of the Kapampangan and the Ibalnan script of the Palawan people. Tennis has been a sport in the program of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men's division since the 1949–1950 season. The women's tennis competition started in the 2001–2002 season. UAAP Basketball Championship
The UAAP Basketball Championship holds its basketball tournaments from September to December. Basketball is a mandatory sport in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). All eight universities participate in the Men's, Women's, and Juniors (Boys') tournaments. The tournament is divided into two divisions, the Seniors' division, which is further subdivided into the Men's tournament, for male collegiate players, and the Women's tournament for female collegiate players. The other division is the Juniors' which is also subdivided into two tournaments for the male and female high school athletes. The UAAP basketball sport has a rich history of schools establishing dynasties. UE won a record seven consecutive basketball titles from 1965 to 1971 albeit the third one was a shared championship with UST. Ateneo had a 5-year winning streak from 2008 to 2012. UAAP Baseball Championship
Baseball in the UAAP is an all-male sport. Six teams are participating in the seniors division while there are four teams in the juniors division. Baseball was introduced as a sport in the seniors division in 1938. In the juniors division, Baseball was added as a demonstration sport in Season 74 (2011–12) as there were only three teams participating. In Season 80 (2017–18), it was elevated to a regular sport since the number of participating teams increased to four. UAAP Volleyball Championship
The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) volleyball tournament is divided into four divisions, namely men's, women's, boys' and girls'. Volleyball is a mandatory sport in the women's division. The UAAP volleyball tournament was held in the first semester of the school year until the UAAP Board decided to move it to the second semester in Season 69 (school year 2006–2007). This decision was made so that the games can be televised to improve its popularity. Tournament format The tournament begins with a double round robin group stage, where a team meets its opponent twice in a season. A semi-finals round composed of the top four teams follows, after which the top two teams meet in a best-of-three series Finals. The UAAP Badminton Championship is a badminton tournament on the Philippines for university teams. Results Streaks * UP owns the longest streak for most number of consecutive titles in the Women's Division at six. UAAP Judo Championship
The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Judo Tournament was previously held during the second semester of the school year. Due to a conflict with volleyball television coverage, though, it was moved to the first semester. Judo was a demonstration sport in the Juniors Division in UAAP Season 69, 70, and 71, and is not included in the official count of total titles. For this event, both the Men's and Women's teams have seven weight divisions each, and two representatives per weight division. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded to the winners of each division, with each medal being assigned a corresponding number of points. A gold medal is worth 10 points; silver, 5; and bronze, 2. The University Athletic Association of the Philippines Football Championship is usually held during the second semester of the school year (December–April). Tournament format The tournament has three divisions: men, women and boys. As of season 77 (2014–15), eight member universities field a team in the men's division and five in the women's division. The number of participating schools increased to eight from seven in the men's division. Adamson University fielded a men's team in Season 77 (2014–15). Adamson made its return in men's football after more than a decade of absence.
