Field Hockey At The 1980 Summer Olympics – Men's Tournament
The men's field hockey tournament at the 1980 Summer Olympics was the 14th edition of the field hockey event for men at the Summer Olympic Games. It was held over a ten-day period beginning on 20 July, and culminating on 29 July 1980. Games were played across two venues in Moscow, at the Minor Arena at Dynamo Stadium and Young Pioneers Stadium. India won the gold medal for the eighth time, defeating Spain 4–3 in the gold-medal match. Soviet Union won the bronze medal after defeating Poland men's national field hockey team, Poland 2–1 in the bronze-medal match. In partial support of the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in protest over the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan, the Dutch athletes boycotted the Opening Ceremony, and the Olympic Flag was used in place of Netherlands' national flag at medal ceremonies. 75 competitors, 57 men and 18 women, took part in 56 events in 10 sports. Mohammed Shahid
Mohammed Shahid (14 April 1960 – 20 July 2016) was an Indian field hockey player. He is considered one of India's best to have played the game and was known for his dribbling skills. He was a member of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. He was awarded Arjuna Award in 1980–1981 and Padma Shri in 1986. Career Mohammed Shahid was born on 14 April 1960 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He made his first appearance for India in the junior team in 1979 at the Junior World Cup in France. Shahid made his first senior team appearance the same year in a four-nation tournament in Kuala Lumpur under the captaincy of Vasudevan Baskaran, after his inclusion in the team following his impressive performance in the Aga Khan Cup. Vasudevan Baskaran
Vasudevan Baskaran (born 17 August 1950) is a former field hockey player and coach from Tamil Nadu, India. He captained the India, which won the gold medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, then part of the Soviet Union. Thereafter he coached and mentored several players for the Indian team. He was the head coach of the India hockey team at the 1998 and 2006 Hockey World Cup. Now he lives with his family in Besant Nagar in Chennai, India. Career After the Olympic gold victory, Baskaran had coached India several times, the last time at the 2006 Men's Hockey World Cup in Mönchengladbach.
