Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral, or the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Clermont-Ferrand (french: Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Clermont-Ferrand), is a Gothic cathedral and French national monument located in the town of Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne. It is the seat of the Archbishops of Clermont (bishops until 2002). It is built entirely in black lava stone, which makes it highly distinctive, and visible from a great distance. Its twin spires are 96.1 metres tall, and tower above the town's rooftops. It has been listed since 1862 as a ''monument historique'' by the French Ministry of Culture. It is located east of the city, in Aulnat, both ''communes'' of the Puy-de-Dôme department in the Auvergne region of France, in the middle of France. Antoine François Claude, comte Ferrand (4 July 175117 January 1825), French statesman and political writer, was born in Paris, and became a member of the ''parlement'' of Paris at eighteen. Life and career Ferrand left France with the first party of emigrants, and attached himself to the Prince of Condé; late he was a member of the council of regency formed by the comte de Provence after the death of Louis XVI. He lived at Regensburg until 1801, when he returned to France, though he still sought to serve the royalist cause. In 1814 Ferrand was made minister of state and postmaster-general. Jacqueline Lelong-Ferrand (17 February 1918, Alès, France – 26 April 2014, Sceaux, Hauts-de-Seine, Sceaux, France) was a French mathematician who worked on conformal map, conformal representation theory, potential theory, and Riemannian manifolds. Jean Ferrand (died 11 November 1990) was a French ice hockey goaltender and the long-time president of the French Ice Sports Federation.
