Ferdinand Kowarz
Ferdinand Kowarz (23 February 1838, Planá – 22 September 1914, Františkovy Lázně), was a Bohemian-Austrian entomologist who described many new species of Diptera Flies are insects of the order Diptera, the name being derived from the Greek δι- ''di-'' "two", and πτερόν ''pteron'' "wing". Planá (České Budějovice District)
Planá (german: Plan) is a municipality and village in České Budějovice District in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 300 inhabitants. Geography Planá is located about southwest of České Budějovice. It lies in the České Budějovice Basin. The Vltava river forms its southern and eastern municipal borders. History The first written mention of Planá is from 1259. Between 1961 and 1990, it was an administrative part of Homole (České Budějovice District), Homole. Since 24 November 1990, it has been a separate municipality. Transport A part of České Budějovice Airport is located in the municipal territory. Sights Planá is poor in monuments. The only protected cultural monument is a homestead from 1881. In the centre of Planá is the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. Adrian C
Adrian is a form of the Latin given name Adrianus or Hadrianus. Its ultimate origin is most likely via the former river Adria from the Venetic and Illyrian word ''adur'', meaning "sea" or "water". The Adria was until the 8th century BC the main channel of the Po River into the Adriatic Sea but ceased to exist before the 1st century BC. Františkovy Lázně
Františkovy Lázně (; german: Franzensbad) is a spa town in Cheb District in the Karlovy Vary Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 5,200 inhabitants. Together with neighbouring Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně, it is part of the West Bohemian Spa Triangle. The town centre is well preserved and since 1992 has been protected as an urban monument reservation. In 2021, the town became part of the transnational UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name "Great Spa Towns of Europe" because of its natural springs and its architectural testimony to the popularity of spa towns across Europe in the 18th through 20th centuries. Carl Robert Osten-Sacken
Carl Robert Osten-Sacken or Carl-Robert Romanovich, Baron von der Osten-Sacken, Baron Osten Sacken (21 August 1828, – 20 May 1906) was a Russian diplomat and entomologist. He served as the Russian consul general in New York City during the American Civil War, living in the United States from 1856 to 1877. He worked on the taxonomy of flies in general and particularly of the family Tipulidae (crane flies). Early life Carl Robert Osten-Sacken was born on 21 August 1828 in St. Petersburg as the son of Baltic German Baron Reinhold Friedrich von der Osten-Sacken (1791-1864) and his wife, Elisabeth von Engelhardt (1805-1873). Biography He took an interest in insects at the age of eleven through the influence of Joseph N. Schatiloff, a Russian coleopterist.
