Fencing At The 1908 Summer Olympics
At the 1908 Summer Olympics, four fencing Fencing is a group of three related combat sports. The three disciplines in modern fencing are the foil, the épée, and the sabre (also ''saber''); winning points are made through the weapon's contact with an opponent. A fourth discipline, s ... events were contested. The 1908 Games were the first to lack a foil competition. Foil fencing, "not being in the opinion of the organisers a form of sport which is improved by competition,Official Report, p. 127" was held only as a display. The 1908 Olympics did introduce team sabre and épée competitions. As in the 1904 edition, the London Games held no events for masters; all fencing was done by amateurs. Franco-British Exhibition (1908)
The Franco-British Exhibition was a large public fair held in London between 14 May and 31 October 1908. The exhibition attracted 8 million visitors and celebrated the Entente Cordiale signed in 1904 by the United Kingdom and France. The chief architect of the buildings was John Belcher. The Exhibition was held in an area of west London near Shepherd's Bush which is now called White City: the area acquired its name from the exhibition buildings which were all painted white. The 1908 Summer Olympics fencing events were held in the district alongside the festivities. Attractions The fair was the largest exhibition of its kind in Britain, and the first international exhibition co-organised and sponsored by two countries. Alessandro Pirzio-Biroli
Alessandro Pirzio Biroli (23 July 1877 – 20 May 1962) was an Italian fencer and army General. Biography Biroli won a silver medal competing in the team sabre event at the 1908 Summer Olympics. During the First World War Biroli fought in the Macedonian Front as commander of one battalion of Italian Army who was decorated by the Government of the Kingdom of Serbia with the Order of the White Eagle with swords. In 1918 Pirzio Biroli became the commanding officer for the 8th Bersaglieri Regiment. Between 1921 and 1927, he headed a military mission to Ecuador. He was commanding general of the ''Monte Nero Division'' from 1932 to 1933, and of the Italian V ''Trieste'' Corps from 1933 to 1935. He commanded the Eritrean Corps in the Second Italo-Abyssinian War, and subsequently was Governor of Amhara province in Italian East Africa from 1936 to 1937. Biroli was not fascist. Riccardo Nowak (16 January 1885 – 18 February 1950) was an Italian épée, foil and sabre fencer who took part in the 1908 Olympic Games in London. Biography Nowak won an Olympic silver medal in fencing at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. He was part of the Italian team that finished second in the sabre behind Hungary. Marcello Bertinetti (26 April 1885 – 31 July 1967) was an Italian fencer. He competed in sabre and épée events at the 1908, 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics and won four team medals. Lajos Werkner
Lajos Werkner (23 October 1883 – 12 November 1943) was a Hungarian Olympic champion sabre fencer. Early and personal life Werkner was born in Budapest, Hungary, and was Jewish. Werkner was educated as a mechanical engineer. Fencing career Wernker trained at the Nemzeti Vívó Club (NVC) in Budapest. Werkner won team gold medals at the 1908 Olympics in London at 24 years of age, and at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm at 28 years of age, placing sixth-seventh individually. Dr. Péter Tóth (12 July 1882 – 28 February 1967) was a Hungarian fencer who competed at the 1906 Intercalated Games and at the 1908, 1912 and 1928 Olympics. He won team gold medals in sabre in 1908 and 1912, finishing fifth-sixth individually; he won an individual bronze medal in the sabre three hits event in 1906. In 1928 he placed fifth in the team foil. Domestically Tóth won 17 Hungarian foil and sabre titles between 1907 and 1934, and competed until 1937. Dr. Oszkár Gerde (8 July 1883 – 8 October 1944) was a Hungarian sabre fencer who won team gold medals at the 1908 and 1912 Olympics. After finishing his active career he judged international fencing competitions and worked as a lawyer. Being a Jew, he was deported from Hungary in 1944, and killed in the same year at the Mauthausen-Gusen Concentration Camp in Austria.
