The Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association is a non-union club and lobbying organization for federal law enforcement, including the Secret Service, DHS's Air Marshals and TSA's Transportation Security Officers. History and stances In 1986, FLEOA opposed the Firearm Owners Protection Act, which softened the 1968 Gun Control Act. It was introduced by Sen. James A. McClure, supported by the NRA. The law banned the creation of a national gun registry. A compromise was reached in the House, allowing William J. Hughes's amendment banning new automatic weapon ownership. Despite the objections of FLEOA, Police Foundation, IACP, FOP, Troopers, PERF, Sheriffs, NOBLE, Brotherhood, NAPO and the New York City Police Commissioner, the bill passed and was signed by Ronald Reagan in May 1986. Nisour Square Massacre
The Nisour Square massacre occurred on September 16, 2007, when employees of Blackwater Security Consulting (now Constellis), a private military company contracted by the US government to provide security services in Iraq, shot at Iraqi civilians, killing 17 and injuring 20 in Nisour Square, Baghdad, while escorting a U.S. embassy convoy. The killings outraged Iraqis and strained relations between Iraq and the United States. In 2014, four Blackwater employees were tried and convicted in U.S. federal court; one of murder, and the other three of manslaughter and firearms charges; all four convicted were pardoned by President Donald Trump in December 2020. Blackwater guards claimed that the convoy was ambushed and that they fired at the attackers in defense of the convoy. 2004 Fallujah Ambush
The 2004 Fallujah Blackwater incident occurred on March 31, 2004, when Iraqi insurgents attacked a convoy containing four American contractors from the private military company Blackwater USA who were conducting a delivery for food caterers ESS. The ambush The four armed contractors, Scott Helvenston, Jerry Zovko, Wesley Batalona, and Mike Teague, were killed and dragged from their vehicles. Their bodies were beaten and burned, with their charred corpses then dragged through the city streets before being hanged over a bridge crossing the Euphrates River. Blackwater was an American private military company founded on December 26, 1996 by former Navy SEAL officer Erik Prince. It was renamed Xe Services in 2009 and known as Academi since 2011 after it was acquired by a group of private investors. In 2014, Academi merged with Triple Canopy, a subsidiary of Constellis Group. In the United States Senate election held in the State of New York on November 7, 2000, Hillary Rodham Clinton, then First Lady of the United States and the first First Lady to run for political office, defeated U.S. Representative Rick Lazio.
