It served as his home and as the first Federal land office in that part of the Northwest Territory known as the Seven Ranges. In 1809 it was moved, and twelve years later encased in a brick structure where it was discovered in 1940. Steubenville is a city in and the county seat of Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. Located along the Ohio River 33 miles west of Pittsburgh, it had a population of 18,161 at the 2020 census. Ohio Company Land Office
The Ohio Company Land Office is one of the original buildings of the city of Marietta, Ohio, United States. The Office is listed individually in the National Register of Historic Places and as a contributing property to the Marietta Historic District. The Land Office was built after Ohio Company of Associates landed at Marietta in 1788. The Office was built at approximately . In 1791 the building was moved away from the Muskingum River so it could be protected by the guns of Campus Martius. From this location, Ohio Company surveyors plotted the company's entire purchase in southeastern Ohio, more than in total, under the direction of Rufus Putnam as the company's chief. Samuel Stokely (January 25, 1796 – May 23, 1861) was an American lawyer and politician who served one term as a United States House of Representatives, U.S. Representative from Ohio from 1841 to 1843. Biography Born in Washington, Pennsylvania, Stokely attended private schools. He was graduated from Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson College), Washington, Pennsylvania, in 1813. He studied law. He was Admission to the bar in the United States, admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Steubenville, Ohio, in 1817. He was Federal Land Office, United States land receiver 1821–1833. He served as a member of the State senate in 1837 and 1838.
