Fatih Avan
Fatih Avan (born 1 January 1989) is a male Turkish javelin thrower. The tall athlete at is a member of Fenerbahçe Athletics team, where he is coached by Metin Altıntaş. Career Avan participated at the 2009 Mediterranean Games in Pescara, Italy and won the gold medal with a personal best throw of 79.78 m. At the 9th European Winter Throwing Cup held on 14 March 2009 in Los Realejos on Tenerife, Spain, he ranked third throwing the javelin 74.82 m. Avan is broke the Turkish record with a mark of 77.15 m in June 2009 in Bursa. He represented Turkey at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics, but did not make it past the qualifying round. In 2011 he improved his Turkish record to 81.16 m, clearing the eighty-metre mark for the first time, and the performance brought him the under-23 gold at the 2011 European Cup Winter Throwing. Javelin Throw
The javelin throw is a track and field event where the javelin, a spear about in length, is thrown. The javelin thrower gains momentum by running within a predetermined area. Javelin throwing is an event of both the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. History The javelin throw was added to the Ancient Olympic Games as part of the pentathlon in 708 BC. It included two events, one for distance and the other for accuracy in hitting a target. The javelin was thrown with the aid of a thong ('' ankyle'' in Greek) that was wound around the middle of the shaft. Athletes held the javelin by the ''ankyle'', and when they released the shaft, the unwinding of the thong gave the javelin a spiral trajectory. Throwing javelin-like poles into targets was revived in Germany and Sweden in the early 1870s. 2013 Mediterranean Games
The 2013 Mediterranean Games ( tr, 2013 Akdeniz Oyunları), officially known as the XVII Mediterranean Games ( tr, XVII Akdeniz Oyunları) and commonly known as Mersin 2013, was an international multi-sport event held from 20 to 30 June 2013 in Mersin, Turkey. Mersin was announced as the host city at the General Assembly of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (CIJM) on 23 February 2011. Mersin is the second city in Turkey after İzmir to host the Mediterranean Games. All 24 member National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of the ICMG participated in the Games. 2009 European Cup Winter Throwing
The 2009 European Cup Winter Throwing was held on 14 and 15 March at the Estadio de Los Realejos in Tenerife, Spain. It was the ninth edition of the athletics competition for throwing events and was organised by the European Athletics Association and the Real Federación Española de Atletismo (Spanish athletics federation). The competition featured men's and women's contests in shot put, discus throw, javelin throw and hammer throw. In addition to the senior competitions, there were also under-23 events for younger athletes. A total of 226 athletes from 29 nations entered the competition. It was the first time that Spain hosted the competition. On the first day of competition, Anita Włodarczyk had a world-leading and personal best mark of 75.05 metres to win the women's hammer throw.
