Fanfare For The Comic Muse
''Fanfare for the Comic Muse'' is the debut album by Irish chamber pop band the Divine Comedy, released in 1990 by Setanta Records. Recording took place at Homestead Studios in May 1990 with producer Sean O Neill. Lorcan Mac Loughlann engineered the sessions, and Mudd Wallace mixed the recordings. The album has since been disowned by the band's lead singer/songwriter, Neil Hannon, due to its stylistic differences from the band's later works. "The Rise and Fall" was later re-recorded for the ''Timewatch'' EP (1991). In 2020, the album was re-released for the first time as part of the 23-CD box set ''Venus, Folly, Cupid & Time - Thirty Years of the Divine Comedy''. The tracks are featured on the second CD of the ''Juveneilia'' set, alongside remastered versions of the ''Timewatch'' and ''Europop'' EPs. The Divine Comedy are a pop band from Northern Ireland, formed in 1989 and fronted by Neil Hannon. Setanta Records was a British independent record label led by founder Keith Cullen. Setanta published UK and Irish indie music in the late 1980s and in the 1990s. History Setanta Records was started in a Camberwell, London squat by former bicycle courier Keith Cullen. Their first success came when Dublin band Into Paradise received positive reviews from the British music press for their Setanta debut titled ''Under the Water''. Major label interest followed and Into Paradise subsequently signed to Ensign Records retaining Cullen as band manager. ''Liberation'' is the second album by Irish chamber pop band the Divine Comedy, released on 18 August 1993 by Setanta Records. Following the unsuccessful ''Fanfare for the Comic Muse'', the group started improvising on their new album which was recorded in Fundamental, London in March 1993. Although it was the band's second album, the band's leader, Neil Hannon, often refers to it as the first, due to the stylistic differences from their debut album, ''Fanfare for the Comic Muse''. Background Production The album was recorded over the space of twelve days in March, 1993 by Hannon and Darren Allison. Hannon played most of the instruments on the album, while Allison was the recording engineer and drummer. ''Select'' was a United Kingdom music magazine of the 1990s. It was known for covering indie rock, but featured a wide array of music. Launched in July 1990, its first cover star was Prince. After EMAP Metro bought ''Select'', they revamped its image, and it became known for its coverage of Britpop, a term coined in the magazine by Stuart Maconie. Edward Neil Anthony Hannon (born 7 November 1970) is a Northern Irish singer and songwriter. He is the creator and front man of the chamber pop group The Divine Comedy, and is the band's sole constant member. Hannon wrote the theme tunes for the television sitcoms ''Father Ted'' and '' The IT Crowd''. Early life and education Hannon was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, the son of Brian Hannon, a Church of Ireland minister in the Diocese of Derry and Raphoe and later Bishop of Clogher.
