Fanagmore ( gd, An Fheannag Mhòr) is a hamlet in Sutherland, Highland, in far northwestern Scotland. It lies on the south shore of Loch Laxford, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean The Atlantic Ocean is the second-largest of the world's five oceans, with an area of about . It covers approximately 20% of Earth's surface and about 29% of its water surface area. It is known to separate the " Old World" of Africa, Europe .... Fanagmore consists of three properties, a few farm buildings, a boat launch and a small harbour. There are tourist cruises from the nearby hamlet of Tarbet to Handa Island. Handa Island
Handa Island ( gd, Eilean Shannda) or simply Handa is an island off the west coast of Sutherland, Scotland. It is and at its highest point. The island is of national importance for its birdlife and maritime vegetation, and is a Scottish Wildlife Trust nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and a Special Protection Area (SPA). Handa also forms part of the North-West Sutherland national scenic area, one of 40 such areas in Scotland. A small ferry sails to Handa from Tarbet on the mainland and boat trips operate to it from Fanagmore. The island receives five thousand visitors per annum. Highland ( gd, A' Ghàidhealtachd, ; sco, Hieland) is a council area in the Scottish Highlands and is the largest local government area in the United Kingdom. It was the 7th most populous council area in Scotland at the 2011 census. It shares borders with the council areas of Aberdeenshire, Argyll and Bute, Moray and Perth and Kinross. Their councils, and those of Angus and Stirling, also have areas of the Scottish Highlands within their administrative boundaries. The Highland area covers most of the mainland and inner-Hebridean parts of the historic counties of Inverness-shire and Ross and Cromarty, all of Caithness, Nairnshire and Sutherland and small parts of Argyll and Moray. Sutherland
Sutherland ( gd, Cataibh) is a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area in the Highlands of Scotland. Its county town is Dornoch. Sutherland borders Caithness and Moray Firth to the east, Ross-shire and Cromartyshire (later combined into Ross and Cromarty) to the south and the Atlantic to the north and west. Like its southern neighbour Ross-shire, Sutherland has some of the most dramatic scenery in Europe, especially on its western fringe where the mountains meet the sea. These include high sea cliffs, and very old mountains composed of Precambrian and Cambrian rocks. The name ''Sutherland'' dates from the era of Norwegian Viking rule and settlement over much of the Highlands and Islands, under the rule of the jarl of Orkney. Warren Rovetch
Warren Rovetch (1926-2017) was an American author and traveler. He was also known for writing books in ''The Creaky Traveler'' series. Early life Born in Detroit in 1926, Rovetch completed his undergraduate studies at Wayne University in Detroit and graduate studies at Oxford ( Balliol College), where he was a Sir Robert Mayer Fellow and Fulbright Scholar, receiving his M Phil. in economics in 1951. He became an avid traveler of the world. His journeys began in 1946, with a yearlong adventure through six countries of Europe. In England, he spent nearly six months giving current-events talks for the United States Information Agency and lectures on American history for a British army officers training program. Over the rest of the 20th century and into the 21st, Rovetch and Gerda Fox, his wife of 65 years made 25 extended trips to Europe. Loch Laxford
Laxford is a remote area in the far Northwest Highlands of Scotland around the River Laxford which runs northwest from Loch Stack to Laxford Bay. This bay is an inlet of Loch Laxford, a sea loch and Special Area of Conservation. The river is well known for its salmon fly fishing, indeed the name "Laxford" derives from the Norse for "salmon fjord". The area is important geologically, being a region of shear in the Moine Thrust. A road bridge, Laxford Bridge, crosses the river adjacent to the A838 and A894 roads, the road junction making the spot well known to tourists. Laxford is in Sutherland, in the Highland council area of Scotland; Scourie, away, is the nearest village.
