Fall 1976 PGA Tour Qualifying School Graduates
This is a list of the Fall 1976 PGA Tour Qualifying School graduates. The tournament was held at Rancho Viejo Resort and Golf Course in Brownsville, Texas. It was known for its "miserable weather." Tournament summary A number of notable players did not graduate onto the PGA Tour. They included Curtis Strange, then considered by some the top amateur in the country. Strange finished with three consecutive bogeys to miss qualifying by a shot. It was considered "the most stunning development" of the event. In addition, "sure-fire bets" Phil Hancock and Wayne Levi were also unsuccessful. A number of notable players were successful, however. Strange's teammate from Wake Forest, Jay Haas, did graduate. In his third attempt, Mark Lye qualified for the PGA Tour. After several successful seasons abroad, Australian Graham Marsh earned his PGA Tour card for the first time. Brownsville, Texas
Brownsville () is a city in Cameron County in the U.S. state of Texas. It is on the western Gulf Coast in South Texas, adjacent to the border with Matamoros, Mexico. Dick Mast
Richard Mast (born March 23, 1951) is an American professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour, and Champions Tour. Early life Mast was born in Bluffton, Ohio. He graduated from St. Petersburg Junior College in 1971 with a degree in business. Professional career Mast turned pro in 1972. He played on the PGA Tour intermittently in the 1970s and early 1980s. He finished fourth in the 1985 qualifying school to earn his Tour card for 1986. He kept his card through the 1989 season when he finished 173rd on the money list and lost his card. The biggest impression he made in the majors was at the U.S. Open in 1988, where he was only one stroke off the lead after the first round; he went on to finish in a tie for 50th place. Ron Streck
Ronald Raymond Streck (born July 17, 1954) is an American professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour, and is a current player on the Champions Tour. Career Streck was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His father started him playing golf at age 3. He attended the University of Tulsa from 1973 to 1976, and was twice an All-American. He turned pro in 1976. Streck had several notable "firsts" in the annals of professional golf, earning him the nickname "Milestone Man". He was the first PGA player to play with Metalwoods. He was the first PGA player to win with Metalwoods (at the 1981 Michelob-Houston Open). With his victory in 2005 at the Commerce Bank Championship, he became the first player to win events on all three U.S.-based men's professional Tours (PGA, Nationwide, and Champions). Mike Reid (golfer)
Michael Daniel Reid (born July 1, 1954) is an American professional golfer. Reid was one of the top amateurs in the mid-1970s, winning the 1976 Pacific Coast Amateur and leading the 1976 U.S. Open after the first round. As a professional, Reid won two PGA Tour events and finished in the top-10 70 times. In 1989, Reid came close to winning two major championships, the Masters and the PGA Championship, leading both of them during closing holes of the final round. On the Champions Tour, Reid won two senior majors, the 2005 Senior PGA Championship and the 2009 Tradition. Early life Reid was born in Bainbridge, Maryland, the son of an Air Force officer. Don Pooley
Sheldon George "Don" Pooley, Jr. (born August 27, 1951) is an American professional golfer who has won tournaments on both the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour. Pooley was born in Phoenix, Arizona. He grew up in Riverside, California. He attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he was a member of the golf team. He turned pro in 1973. Despite winning the 1980 B.C. Open and the 1987 Memorial Tournament, Pooley is probably best remembered in his PGA Tour career for his dramatic million-dollar hole-in-one at the 1987 Bay Hill Classic. Pooley received $500,000 as did Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women in Orlando, Florida because of this once-in-a-lifetime shot. Peter Erling Jacobsen (born March 4, 1954) is an American professional golfer and commentator on Golf Channel and NBC. He has played on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour. Jim Booros
James Daniel Booros (born April 22, 1951) is an American professional golfer who played full-time on the PGA Tour for nine years. Booros played in about 250 events between 1977 and 1991 finishing in the top-125 on the money list five times. He won the 1989 Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic before that became an official PGA Tour event. His best finish in a major championship was a T-68 at the 1983 U.S. Open. European Tour
The European Tour (currently known as the DP World Tour for sponsorship reasons), legally the PGA European Tour is the leading men's professional golf tour in Europe. The organisation also operates the European Senior Tour (for players aged fifty or older) and the developmental Challenge Tour; the second tier of men’s professional golf in Europe. The tour's headquarters are at the Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England. Jack Newton
Jack Newton OAM (30 January 1950 – 14 April 2022) was an Australian professional golfer. He won the Buick-Goodwrench Open on the PGA Tour and won three times on the European Tour, including the British PGA Matchplay Championship in 1974. He won the Australia Open in 1979 and a number of other tournaments in Australia, New Zealand and Africa. Twice, he was a runner-up in major championships, losing the 1975 Open Championship, in a playoff against Tom Watson, and the 1980 Masters Tournament, where he finished four strokes behind the winner, Seve Ballesteros. In 1983 Newton had a near-fatal accident when he walked into the spinning propeller of an airplane, losing his right arm and eye. Golf career Newton was born in Cessnock, New South Wales.
