Charles Richard Fairey
Sir Charles Richard Fairey MBE FRAeS (5 May 1887 – 30 September 1956), also known as Richard Fairey, was an English aircraft manufacturer. Early life Charles Fairey was born on 5 May 1887 in Hendon, Middlesex and educated at the Merchant Taylors' School, Northwood and Ardingly College, and later as an apprentice at the Finsbury Technical College where he studied City & Guilds courses in electrical engineering and chemistry. Fairey's father had died when he was aged 11 and although from a middle-class background this dramatic change in the families circumstances led to Fairey taking a job, aged 15 with the Jandus Electric Company of London, who manufactured arc lamps. His progress was such that he was able to take charge of the installation of electric lights at Heysham docks whilst still in his teens. David Fairey
David Harold Richardson Fairey (born 17 August 1940) is a former English cricketer. Fairey was a right-handed batsman who bowled left-arm medium-pace. Born in Linton, Cambridgeshire, he was also a field hockey player. Fairey made his debut for Cambridgeshire in the 1957 Minor Counties Championship against Hertfordshire. Fairey played Minor counties cricket for Cambridgeshire from 1957 to 1979, which included 88 Minor Counties Championship matches. In 1964, he made his List A debut against Essex in the Gillette Cup. He played five further List A matches for Cambridgeshire, the last coming against Northamptonshire in 1975. In his six List A matches, he scored 72 runs at a batting average of 14.40, with a high score of 22. With the ball he took 3 wickets at a bowling average of 20.33, with best figures of 2/8. Francis Thrower Fairey (November 11, 1887 – November 4, 1971) was a Canadian politician, who served as a Liberal member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1953 to 1957. He was a teacher by career. He was first elected at the Victoria riding in the 1953 general election, but was defeated by Albert McPhillips of the Progressive Conservatives in the 1957 election. Prior to entering politics, he served as a teacher in Vancouver, British Columbia, Deputy Minister of Education, provincial Director of Industrial and Technical Education and also the Regional Director of the Canadian Vocational Training Program. The Fairey Aviation Company Limited was a British aircraft manufacturer of the first half of the 20th century based in Hayes in Middlesex and Heaton Chapel and RAF Ringway in Cheshire. Avions Fairey was the Belgian-based subsidiary of the British Fairey Aviation that built aircraft for the Belgian government. It subsequently separated from the UK parent and became SONACA. History In the late 1920s, the ''Aéronautique Militaire'' (Belgian Air Force) set out to replace its old aircraft. Accordingly, Belgian officers attended the Hendon Air Display where they saw a Fairey Firefly and met Fairey staff. The Firefly toured Belgian air bases in 1930 and met with approval from pilots. This led to a contract for 12 UK-built Firefly II to be followed by a further 33 aircraft built in Belgium. Fairey already had a number of Belgians in key roles in the company; Ernest Oscar Tips and Marcel Lobelle had joined during the First World War. Tips went to Belgium to set up the subsidiary company. Fairey Fireflash
Fireflash was the United Kingdom's first air-to-air guided missile to see service with the Royal Air Force. Constructed by Fairey Aviation, the missile utilised radar beam riding guidance. Fireflash had relatively limited performance and required the launching aircraft to approach the target from a limited angle astern. The approximately 300 production Fireflash missiles were mostly expended as a training weapon to familiarize RAF pilots with missile firing. It was declared operational very briefly in 1957, thus becoming the RAF's first operational air-to-air missile, but was quickly replaced by the de Havilland Firestreak the next year.
