Free And Open-source Software
Free and open-source software (FOSS) is a term used to refer to groups of software consisting of both free software and open-source software where anyone is freely licensed to use, copy, study, and change the software in any way, and the source code is openly shared so that people are encouraged to voluntarily improve the design of the software. This is in contrast to proprietary software, where the software is under restrictive copyright licensing and the source code is usually hidden from the users. FOSS maintains the software user's civil liberty rights (see the Four Essential Freedoms, below). Other benefits of using FOSS can include decreased software costs, increased security and stability (especially in regard to malware), protecting privacy, education, and giving users more control over their own hardware. Full Option Science System
The Full-Option Science System (FOSS) is a research-based science curriculum for grades K–8 developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. FOSS is also an ongoing research project dedicated to improving the learning and teaching of science. History The FOSS K–8 program was developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California at Berkeley, under three separate National Science Foundation grants (1988 1991, 1996). The program was originally developed and trial tested in urban and suburban San Francisco Bay Area school districts and field-tested and implemented nationally in ten sites. Twenty-six modules were developed for K–6, and nine courses for middle school. The FOSS K–6 program went through a major revision in 2000 and was then adopted in Texas. FOSS is a global provider of high-tech analytical solutions used mainly in the agricultural and food industries. The company is headquartered in Hillerød, Denmark. History FOSS was founded by Nils Foss in 1956 as N. Foss Electric A/S. The first products were instruments used in the testing of moisture in grain. They were followed by analytical solutions for the dairy industry. In 1997, FOSS acquired Perstorp Analytical AB with the subsidiaries Tecator AB and NIRSystems Inc. Nils Foss was CEO of the company until 1990 when the position was taken over by his son Peter Foss. In 2011, Torben Ladegaard was appointed to CEO while Peter Foss became chairman of the company. River Foss
The River Foss is in North Yorkshire, England. It is a tributary of the River Ouse. It rises in the Foss Crooks Woods near Oulston Reservoir close to the village of Yearsley and runs south through the Vale of York to the Ouse in the centre of York. The name most likely comes from the Latin word Fossa, meaning ditch. It is mentioned in the ''Domesday Book''. The York district was settled by Norwegian and Danish people, so parts of the place names could be old Norse. Referring to the etymological dictionary "Etymologisk ordbog", dealing with the common Danish and Norwegian languages – roots of words and the original meaning. The old Norse word ''Fos'' (waterfall) meaning impetuous. The River Foss was dammed, and even though the elevation to the River Ouse is small, a waterfall was formed. Foss (cat)
Foss (c. 1873 – 26 November 1887), formally named Aderphos, was the pet cat of Edward Lear, the 19th-century author, illustrator, and poet. A "stumpy-tailed," "portly," and "unattractive" tabby cat, he was a favourite of Lear's and played an important role as a companion in the poet's lonely later years. Foss is mentioned frequently in Lear's correspondence and appears in his illustrations and at least one poem. Foss is said to have been the inspiration for the pussycat in Lear's illustrations for his poem " The Owl and the Pussycat". The Foss River is a stream in the U.S. state of Washington. It has two main forks, the East Fork Foss River and the West Fork Foss River. The main stem is formed by the confluence of the two forks.
