Bell YFM-1 Airacuda
The Bell YFM-1 Airacuda was an American heavy fighter aircraft, developed by the Bell Aircraft Corporation during the mid-1930s. It was the first military aircraft produced by Bell. Originally designated the Bell Model 1, the Airacuda first flew on 1 September 1937. The Airacuda was marked by bold design advances and considerable flaws that eventually grounded the aircraft. The Airacuda was Bell Aircraft's answer for a " bomber destroyer" aircraft. Although it did see limited production, and one fully operational squadron was eventually formed, only one prototype and 12 production models were ultimately built, in three slightly different versions. Farm to Market Road 1 (FM 1) is a Farm to Market Road, a state-maintained road which serves to connect rural and agricultural areas to market towns, in the U.S. state of Texas, maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The road was the first Farm to Market Road to be designated in Texas at the request of local industry for a paved road. The road provides access to rural areas of East Texas from U.S. Highway 96 (US 96). History FM 1 was designated on April 23, 1941, and was the first Farm to Market Road to be designated in Texas. It was designated shortly after it was upgraded from a dirt road to a paved road at the request of the Temple Lumber Company and two gas companies. Throughout its history, the road has predominantly served the logging industry. The Grumman F4F Wildcat is an American carrier-based fighter aircraft that entered service in 1940 with the United States Navy, and the British Royal Navy where it was initially known as the Martlet. First used by the British in the North Atlantic, the Wildcat was the only effective fighter available to the United States Navy and Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during the early part of the Second World War. The disappointing Brewster Buffalo was withdrawn in favor of the Wildcat and replaced as aircraft became available. With a top speed of , the Wildcat was outperformed by the faster (), more maneuverable, and longer-ranged Mitsubishi A6M Zero. Soaring Society of America November 1983. USPS 499-920 Design and development The FM-1 was first flown in 1968. The designation indicates the designer's initials. The FM-1 features mixed construction. The aft fuselage and wings are constructed from wood, with the forward fuselage made from welded steel tubing, covered in fibreglass. The wing employs a NACA 4400R airfoil. The aircraft was originally constructed with a T-tail, but this was later changed to a conventional low tail. The cockpit accommodation is one seat in a semi-reclining position. Only one example was completed and registered in the ''Experimental - Amateur-built'' category.
