FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1954
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1954 took place 13-21 February 1954 in Falun, Sweden. These were the first races where women competed with events in the 10 km and 3 × 5 km relay. It also saw the 18 km reduced to 15 km in men's cross-country along with the return of the 30 km which was last held in 1926. The Nordic combined saw the ski jump held first with the cross-country distance reduced to 15 km as well. The Soviet Union also debuted in these championships as well. Falun
Falun () is a city and the seat of Falun Municipality in Dalarna County, Sweden, with 37,291 inhabitants in 2010. It is also the capital of Dalarna County. Falun forms, together with Borlänge, a metropolitan area with just over 100,000 inhabitants. Falun was originally famous for its copper mine, and is today an important service and industrial city even though the mine is closed (since 1992). Faluån is a river, flowing through the city, separating it into two sides. Falu copper mine is located on one of the sides which during many centuries was one of Sweden's main business. This side of the river was usually called "the mining side", where not many plants grew due to the toxic smoke which contaminated the soil. On the other side of the river, where the smoke did not reach, set many large villas, which made this side to be called "the delightful side". Sixten Jernberg
Edy Sixten Jernberg, known as "Sixten", (6 February 1929 – 14 July 2012) was a Swedish cross-country skier and one of the most successful cross-country skiers of all time. Between 1952 and 1964 he took part in 363 ski races, finishing within the podium in 263 and winning 134 of them; during this period he won four world titles and nine Olympic medals. Gunder Gundersen
Gunder Gundersen (12 September 1930 – 2 June 2005) was a Norwegian Nordic combined skier and sports official. He was born in Asker. Competitive career During his active career he won two individual FIS Nordic World Ski Championships medals (1954: silver, 1958: bronze) and the Holmenkollen ski festival three times (1952, 1959 (shared with Sverre Stenersen, and 1960). He finished eleventh in the Nordic combined event at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. Gundersen received the Holmenkollen medal in 1959 and represented the club IF Frisk Asker. Post-retirement career Gundersen was the Technical Director of the Nordic combined individual event at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. His most significant impact on Nordic combined was creating the "Gundersen method", in use since 1985. Sverre Stenersen
Sverre Stenersen (18 June 1926 – 17 December 2005) was a Norwegian Nordic combined skier who dominated the event throughout the 1950s. His biggest triumphs were winning individual gold medals at the 1954 World Championships and 1956 Olympics. He also won a bronze at the 1952 Olympics and a silver at the 1958 World Championships. Stenersen won the Nordic combined event at the national championships in 1954–58 and at the Holmenkollen ski festival in 1955, 1956 and 1959. Sonja Viola Edström-Ruthström (''Edström'' before 1960, 18 November 1930 – 15 October 2020) was a Swedish cross-country skier. She competed at the 1952, 1956, and 1960 Olympics in the 10 km and 3 × 5 km relay events and won bronze medals in both in 1956; in 1960 she finished fifth in the 10 km, but won the 3 × 5 km relay. Anna-Lisa Eriksson (21 June 1928 – 26 May 2012) was a Swedish cross-country skier who won a bronze medal in the 3 × 5 km relay at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Eriksson won another bronze medal in the 3 × 5 km relay at the 1954 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun. Sirkka Tellervo "Telle" Polkunen (later ''Vilander'', 6 November 1927 – 28 September 2014),Sirkka Polkunen's obituary was a Finnish cross-country skier who competed at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics. Margarita Maslennikova (2 November 1928 – 5 March 2021) was a Soviet cross-country skier who competed in the 1950s. She was born in Leningrad. She won a gold medal in the 3 × 5 km relay at the 1954 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun and finished fourth in the 10 km event at those same championships. Siiri Johanna "Äitee" Rantanen ( Lintunen, born 14 December 1924) is a Finnish retired cross-country skier. She competed in the 1952, 1956 and 1960 Olympics and won a medal in each of them: a gold and a bronze in the 3 × 5 km relay in 1956–60 and another bronze in the individual 10 km in 1952; she placed fifth and 15th over 10 km in 1956 and 1960, respectively.
