FIL European Luge Championships 1970
The FIL European Luge Championships 1970 took place in Hammarstrand, Sweden. This event was dominated by the rise of the East German team, who won six of the nine available medals at this championship. Hammarstrand
Hammarstrand is a locality and the seat of Ragunda Municipality in Jämtland County, Sweden with 1,052 inhabitants in 2010. The town is host to a bobsleigh and luge track. Christina Schmuck
Christina Schmuck (sometimes listed as Christa Schmuck; born 26 January 1944 in Salzberg) is a West German luger who competed during the late 1960s and early 1970s. At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, she originally finished fifth in the women's singles event, but was awarded the silver medal upon the disqualifications of the East German team of Ortrun Enderlein (who finished first), Anna-Maria Müller (second), and Angela Knösel (fourth) when the East Germans were discovered to have their runners being illegally heated. Schmuck also won two medals in the women's singles event at the FIL World Luge Championships with a silver in 1970 and a bronze in 1969. Both championships took place in Königssee, West Germany. Ewald Walch (born 18 August 1940 in Innsbruck) was an Austrian luger who competed from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he won the silver medal in the men's doubles event at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble. Walch also won seven medals in the men's doubles event at the FIL World Luge Championships with three golds (1960, 1969, 1970), two silvers (1967, 1971), and two bronzes (1957, 1963). Manfred Schmid (born 6 June 1944 in Liezen) is an Austrian former luger who competed from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s. Competing in four Winter Olympics, he won two medals at Grenoble in 1968 with a gold in the men's singles event and a silver in the men's doubles event. Schmid also won seven medals at the FIL World Luge Championships with two gold (doubles: 1969, 1970), four silvers (singles: 1969, 1975; doubles: 1967, 1971), and one bronze (singles: 1978). Franz Schachner (born 20 July 1950) is an Austrian former competitive luger who competed during the mid-1970s. Teamed with Rudolf Schmid together they won the bronze medal in the men's doubles event at the 1976 Winter Olympics of Innsbruck. Rudolf Schmid (luger)
Rudolf Schmid (21 March 1951 in Liezen - 21 October 2014) was an Austrian luger who competed during the mid-1970s. Teamed with Franz Schachner together they won the bronze medal in the men's doubles event at the 1976 Winter Olympics of Innsbruck. Schmid also won two bronze medals in the men's doubles event at the FIL World Luge Championships (1974, 1975). He also won two medals at the FIL European Luge Championships with a silver in men's doubles (1970) and a bronze in men's singles (1974). On 21 October 2014 Schmid was killed in a cycling accident in Oberwart, Austria at the age of 64. Reinhard Bredow (also known as Reinhard Bredlow, born 6 April 1947 in Ilsenburg) is an East German former luger who competed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He and Horst Hörnlein won the gold medal in the men's doubles event (shared with the Italian pairing of Walter Plaikner and Paul Hildgartner) at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. She won the gold medal in the women's singles event at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. Horst Hörnlein (also known as Horst Hömlein, born 31 May 1945 in Möhrenbach) is a former East German luger and bobsleigh coach who competed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He and Reinhard Bredow won the gold medal in the men's doubles event (shared with the Italians Paul Hildgartner and Walter Plaikner) at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. Hörnlein also won five medals in the men's doubles event at the FIL World Luge Championships with one gold (1973), one silver (1969), and three bronzes (1965, 1970, 1971).
