Lake Placid, New York
Lake Placid is a village in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,303. The village of Lake Placid is near the center of the town of North Elba, southwest of Plattsburgh. Lake Placid, along with nearby Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake, comprise what is known as the Tri-Lakes region. Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics. Lake Placid also hosted the 1972 Winter Universiade, the 2000 Goodwill Games, and will host the 2023 Winter Universiade. History Lake Placid was founded in the early 19th century to develop an iron ore mining operation. By 1840, the population of "North Elba" (four miles southeast of the present village, near where the road to the Adirondak Loj crosses the Ausable River), was six families. Werner Carmichel
Werner Camichel (26 January 1945 – 27 March 2006 in Samaden) is a Swiss bobsledder who competed in the 1970s. He won the gold medal in the four-man event at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. Camichel also won two gold medals in the four-man event at the FIBT World Championships, winning them in 1973 and 1975. Camichel carried the Swiss flag during the opening ceremonies of the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. He later managed the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track in St. Moritz. Camichel died from cancer in 2006. His sons Corsin Camichel and Duri Camichel Duri Camichel (6 May 1982 – 28 April 2015) was a Swiss professional ice hockey player.
