The Bregenz Forest (german: Bregenzerwald, ) is one of the main regions in the state of Vorarlberg (Austria). It overlaps, but is not coterminous with, the Bregenz Forest Mountains, which belong to a range of the Northern Limestone Alps, specifically the northern flysch zone. It is the drainage basin of the Bregenzer Ach river. Geography The regional inhabitants often divide the Bregenz Forest into two main areas, the Vorderwald ('anterior forest') and Hinterwald ('hinterforest'). The Vorderwald, with its hills and low mountains, is closest to the Rhine valley. The Hinterwald has the higher mountains, with altitudes of up to 2,000 metres. The two regions have distinctive dialect variations. Villages The principal villages in the Bregenz Forest are Bezau (the local capital), Alberschwende, and Egg. Sulzberg (Vorarlberg)
Sulzberg is a municipality in the district of Bregenz, in the westernmost Austrian state of Vorarlberg. It is a member of the German-Austrian community project Naturpark Nagelfluhkette. Toponymy The place name "Sulzeberg" was first mentioned in documents in 1249. Around 1400, "Smaltzhuben uff the Sultzberg" were mentioned as inhabitants, who had to deliver lard and cheese to the Count of Bregenz. Mellau
Mellau is a town in the Bregenz Forest in the westernmost Austrian state of Vorarlberg, part of the district of Bregenz. Geography Mellau covers an area of 40.55 km2. Mellau lies at the foot of the Kanisfluh mountain which is considered to be the Bregenz Forest's landmark. History From 1805 to 1814 Mellau belonged to Bavaria but then reverted to Austria. In 1870 there was a great fire in Mellau: The church, the school, the rectory and 18 other houses were razed. Bizau
Bizau is a town in the Bregenz Forest in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, part of the district Bregenz. The municipality has around 1080 inhabitants. Population Cultural places of interest The Parish Church Hl. Valentin was built in 1472. The Wetzsteinhöhle ("Whetstone Cave") is a manmade dry cavity, a former mine for sandstone. Schwarzenberg (Vorarlberg)
Schwarzenberg is a municipality in the Bregenz Forest in the western Austrian state of Vorarlberg, part of the district of Bregenz. Schwarzenberg has an area of 25.76 km². It lies south of Lake Constance. The village center is heritage-protected for its traditional rustic wooden houses. Egg (Vorarlberg)
Egg is a market town in the Bregenz Forest, in the western Austrian state of Vorarlberg, part of the district of Bregenz. It is the has the highest population of any community in the Bregenzerwald. In 1894, the Brauerei Egg, the only brewery left in the Bregenzerwald, was established there. Population Geography Egg has an area of 65.37 km² (25.2 mi²). The river Bregenzerach and the Schmittenbach stream flow through the village, while the Subersach flows just north of the village into the Bregenzer Ach. Culture The Parish Church Hl. Sibratsgfäll is a municipality in the district of Bregenz in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. Geography Sibratsgfäll is located in the westernmost province of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the district of Bregenz, east of Lake Constance, at an altitude of 929 meters. 46.0% of the area is forested, 34.2% mountainous (Alps). Hittisau
Hittisau is a municipality in the Bregenz (district), district of Bregenz in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. Hittisau has a surface area of 46.65 km². It lies in the Bregenz Forest, Bregenzerwald in the west of the country. Hittisau is a member of the German-Austrian community project Naturpark Nagelfluhkette. Lingenau
Lingenau is a municipality in the district of Bregenz, in the westernmost Austrian state of Vorarlberg. Geography Lingenau is located southeast of Lake Constance, at an altitude of 685m. 30.8% of the area is wooded. There are no other cadastral communities in Lingenau.
