Fürstenberg was a county (german: Grafschaft), and later a principality (''Fürstentum''), of the Holy Roman Empire in Swabia, which was located in present-day southern Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its ruling family was the House of Fürstenberg. History The county emerged when Egino IV, Count of Urach by marriage, inherited large parts of the Duchy of Zähringen upon the death of Duke Berthold V in 1218, and it was originally called the county of Freiburg. The House of Fürstenberg is the name of a German noble family of Westphalia, which descended from Hermannus de Vorstenberg. He was a liegeman of the Archbishop of Cologne, who was among the prince electors of the Holy Roman Empire. Hermannus held a castle for his lord called Fürstenberg ("Prince's Hill") at Ense-Höingen in Soest; this castle would give the family its name. Fürstenberg-Fürstenberg was a territory in Swabia, which was located in present-day southern Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It was ruled by the House of Fürstenberg in the Circle of Swabia during the Holy Roman Empire. History The territory consisted at times of two historical states, which were both named after the state of Fürstenberg and the Fürstenberg Castle. The first state was created in 1408 as a partition of the county of Fürstenberg. Fürstenberg-Pürglitz was a noble family hailing from southwestern Baden-Württemberg, Germany, which was seated at Křivoklát Castle () in Bohemia. Fürstenberg () is a town in the Oberhavel district, Brandenburg, Germany. Until 1919, Fürstenberg was part of the former Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz Geography Fürstenberg is situated on the River Havel, south of Neustrelitz, and north of Berlin. Fürstenberg-Weitra was a cadet branch of the princely House of Fürstenberg, originally from Donaueschingen in Swabia, in present-day southwestern Baden-Württemberg, Germany. From 1744 onwards the landgravial line resided at Weitra Castle in the Archduchy of Austria, a Renaissance fortress close to the border with Bohemia. Though the Austrian possessions were not part of the Swabian Principality of Fürstenberg, the princely family owns Weitra Castle up to today.
