Further Flight
Further Flight (3 May 1986 – July 2001) was an Irish-bred, British-trained thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the Jockey Club Cup for five successive years. In a career which lasted from October 1988 until October 1998, he ran seventy times and won twenty-four races. In 1995, Further Flight was voted European Champion Older Horse at the Cartier Racing Awards. He is the only horse to win the same European Group race five times. Background Further Flight was foaled in Ireland in 1986, sired by the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp winner Pharly out of the Cambridgeshire Handicap winner Flying Nelly, from whom he inherited his grey coat. He became a favourite of the British racing public, competing in and winning long-distance events in a career that lasted from 1988 to 1998. Court Martial (foaled 1942 in England – died in 1974) was a Thoroughbred racehorse bred and raced by Lord Astor best known for defeating two exceptional colts in Dante and Royal Charger for the Classic 2000 Guineas Stakes and as a two-time leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland. Natalma (March 26, 1957 – January 29, 1985) was an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse best known as the dam (mother) of the most important sire, and sire of sires, of the late 20th Century, Northern Dancer. She also established a highly influential female family, which has produced other leading sires Machiavellian and Danehill, plus numerous other stakes winners. Nearctic (February 11, 1954 – 27 July 1973) was a Canadian-bred Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Bred by E. P. Taylor, he was out of the Irish mare Lady Angela, a daughter of the British Champion sire Hyperion. He was sired by the extremely important stallion Nearco. Northern Dancer (May 27, 1961 – November 16, 1990) was a Thoroughbred who, in 1964, became the first Canadian-bred horse to win the Kentucky Derby. The Barry Hills Further Flight Stakes is a Listed flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Nottingham over a distance of 1 mile and 6 furlongs (), and it is scheduled to take place each year in April. The race was originally named after Michelozzo, the 1989 St Leger winner, who made his debut at Nottingham. It was renamed in 1999 to honour Further Flight, a high-class stayer during the 1990s who won this race twice and was trained by Barry Hills. The Prix Kergorlay is a Group 2 flat horse race in France open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Deauville over a distance of 3,000 metres (about 1⅞ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August. History The event was established in 1864, and it was originally called the Prix de la Société d'Encouragement. It was named after the Société d'Encouragement, a governing body of horse racing in France. The inaugural running was part of Deauville's first ever race meeting, and the prize money for the winning owner was 5,100 francs. In its early years the event was contested over 3,000 metres. Cesarewitch Handicap
The Cesarewitch Handicap is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Newmarket over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs (3,621 metres), and finishes on the Rowley Mile. It is scheduled to take place each year in October. History "Cesarewitch" is an anglicised version of Tsesarevich, the title of the heir to the throne in Imperial Russia. The race was named in honour of Tsesarevich Alexander (later Tsar Alexander II), after he donated £300 to the Jockey Club. The event was established in 1839, and the inaugural running was won by Cruiskeen. It was founded in the same year as another major handicap at Newmarket, the Cambridgeshire.
