Bruce MacFarlane Furniss (born May 27, 1957) is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic gold medalist, and former world record-holder in four events. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, he won the 200-meter freestyle and was a member of the winning U.S. team in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay, both in world record time. Swimming career Furniss broke ten world and nineteen American records, and won eleven Amateur Athletic Union and six NCAA titles. He was an integral part of USC's NCAA National Collegiate Championship winning teams of 1976 and 1977. While at USC, Furniss was coached by the legendary Peter Daland, who guided the school's men's swimming team to nine National Titles in his 35 years as the school's coach (1957 to 1992). Fred Furniss
Frederick Furniss (10 July 1922 – 10 April 2017) was an English footballer who played in the position of full-back for Sheffield United. Playing career Furniss started his career with Hallam, and was given his chance to play for United in Wartime (1941), along with Albert Nightingale, in a 3–3 draw against Everton at Goodison Park during an air-raid. He signed his first professional contract with the club in 1946 once the football league was re-established after the war, and he established himself in the Blades defence, along with fellow full-back Eddie Shimwell. He was very fast and difficult to outwit, and played in every match in the United team that won the Second Division in 1952–53. Furniss was the Blades recognised penalty taker in his time at the Lane and never missed a penalty for the Blades. He made 433 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring 18 goals. Henry Sanderson Furniss, 1st Baron Sanderson (1 October 1868 – 25 March 1939), was an English educationalist and socialist politician. He was the third Principal of Ruskin College, an educational institution in Oxford, England, for adults lacking in prior formal education. Early life Furniss was born in London on 1 October 1868, the elder son of Thomas Sanderson Furniss (1833–1912) and Thomas' wife and second cousin Mary Sanderson (died 1899). Like his eldest sister May, Furniss was discovered to be blind from a very young age, possibly as a result of ophthalmia neonatorum at the time of his birth. Two younger siblings had normal eyesight. Furniss's eyesight allowed him to distinguish large objects but he was never able to read. Fortunately, private tutoring (made possible by his family's wealth) allowed him to gain an education that led ultimately to a distinguished academic career in economics. John Kitchener Furniss (11 December 1914 – 15 February 2003) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Furniss was born in Boolarra and played his early football at Glen Iris. He was a follower in Melbourne's 1939 premiership side. The following year he appeared in Melbourne's preliminary final win but injury cost him a spot in their premiership team. He served with the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II. John Furniss (19 June 1809, near Sheffield, England – 16 September 1865, at Clapham, London) was an English Roman Catholic priest, known for his mission to children. Life His father was a wealthy master- cutler. He was educated at Sedgley Park School, St Mary's College, Oscott, and Ushaw College, where he became a priest in 1834. He was resident priest at Doncaster for five years, but his health having given way he travelled during eight years through Europe and the East. After his return home, 1847, he spent some time at Islington, London, working for the welfare of street children. He became a professed member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer at St. Trond, Belgium, 1851, and afterwards gave missions in England and Ireland; but from 1851 until his death he devoted himself wholly to giving missions to children.
