The Furman–Wofford football rivalry, sometimes referred to as the Deep South's Oldest Football Rivalry or the I-85 rivalry, is an American college football rivalry game played by the Furman Paladins football team of Furman University and the Wofford Terriers football team of Wofford College. The Furman Paladins football program is the intercollegiate American football team for the Furman University located in the state of South Carolina. The team competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) as members of the Southern Conference (SoCon). The school's first football team was fielded in 1889. The 2017 Wofford Terriers football team represented Wofford College in the 2017 NCAA Division I FCS football season. They were led by 30th-year head coach Mike Ayers and played their home games at Gibbs Stadium. They were a member of the Southern Conference. Herman Edward "Red" Smith (August 31, 1906 – May 8, 1959) was an American football, baseball, and track coach. He served as the head football coach at Hampden–Sydney College in Hampden Sydney, Virginia from 1939 to 1941 and Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina from 1948 to 1949, compiling a career college football coaching record of 15–28–1. William Phillip Dickens (June 29, 1914 – November 16, 1983) was an American football player, coach of football, basketball and baseball, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Wofford College (1947–1952), the University of Wyoming (1953–1956), and Indiana University Bloomington (1958–1964), compiling a career record of 89–68–10. Dickens was also the head basketball coach at Wofford for one season in 1941–42, tallying a mark of 10–14, Wofford' head baseball coach for two seasons, from 1941 to 1942, and the school's athletic director from 1947 to 1952.
