Funningur Church
Funninger Church, in the village of Funningur, is one of the 10 old wooden churches in the Faroe Islands. It was inaugurated on 30 November 1847 and is for that reason the newest of the old traditional wooden churches. Porkeri Church was also inaugurated in 1847 but a few months beforehand. Funningur Church is the only wooden church and the oldest church in the Eiði Eiði (''Northern Faroese'' ɔiːjɪ) is a village located on the north-west tip of Eysturoy in the Faroe Islands. Funningur is a village on the Faroe Islands. It is located on the northwest coast of Eysturoy (). It was the only village in the municipality called ''Funnings kommuna'', which on 1 January 2009 became part of Runavíkar kommuna. To the west of the village rises the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur (880m), however, the summit itself is not visible from the village. History Tradition says that the first viking who settled on the Faroe Islands, Grímur Kamban, settled in Funningur. He was a Norwegian Viking escaping the tyranny of the Norse king Haraldur Hárfagri. However, this is an error in the saga, because Harald's reign was in the late 9th century, while the first Norse settlers reached the Faroes after 825. (Actually, Irish monks arrived much earlier ca. 625–650). Population About 70 people live in Funningur on both sides of a cascading stream in a compact cluster of houses around a small bay. Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands ( ), or simply the Faroes ( fo, Føroyar ; da, Færøerne ), are a North Atlantic island group and an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Porkeri Church
Porkeri Church is a church in the settlement of Porkeri in the Faroe Islands. Porkeri is situated on the island of Suðuroy Suðuroy (literally South Island, da, Suderø) is the southernmost of the Faroe Islands. The island covers 163.7 square kilometres (63.2 sq mi). In 2018 the population was 4,601. Suðuroy region (sýsla) comprises this island and Lítla ..., which is the southernmost of the islands. It is a wooden church and it has a roof of turf. The church dates from 1847 and contains things donated by seamen who survived lethal storms on the sea, maintaining the tradition of ''almissu'' (seamen in danger promised, according to Nordic tradition, to donate to churches or to God if they got back home alive). Eiði
Eiði (''Northern Faroese'' ɔiːjɪ) is a village located on the north-west tip of Eysturoy in the Faroe Islands. It is the seat of Eiði Municipality. It is located 4 km north of Ljósá and 6.5 km west of Funningur. History Eiði was first mentioned in writing early in the 14th Century, though carbon dating indicated that the village was settled by Vikings, in the 9th century. In the center of the village, is Eiði Church. It was founded on September 18, 1881 and was designed in 1879 by Danish architect Hans Christian Amberg. The LORAN-C transmitter Ejde was previously located just east of Eiði. The transmitter was deemed obsolete in 2015 and was turned off for the final time on 1 January 2016 and dismantled three years later. It was an important station for submarine navigation during the Cold War. At its peak in the 1960s, the number of employees at the station was 32. Sports The village's football team is EB/Streymur. Gjógv
Gjógv (pronounced , literally: ''gorge'', ''geo'') is a village located on the northeast tip of the island of Eysturoy, in the Faroe Islands and 63 km (39 mi) north by road from the capital of Tórshavn. The village was named after a 200-metre (650 ft) long sea-filled gorge that runs north to the sea from the village. History The village was first mentioned in 1584, but it seems to have existed long before then. It has long subsisted on fishing and selling dried and salted fish (''klippfiskur'' in Faroese). At one time as many as 13 fishing boats sailed from Gjógv. Its population has seen a sharp decline in the past 60 years or so. In 1950 the headcount still stood at 210. A factory producing prefabricated concrete elements was founded in the village in 1982. It employs 6 people and is the only one of its kind in the islands.
