The Funkoars are an Australian hip hop act from Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. The group is part of the Certified Wise crew of hip hop artists from South Australia (including the Hilltop Hoods, and Vents), who also collaborated on various recordings. Despite being on hiatus since 2016, Funkoars are still rostered to Golden Era Records. Golden Era Records is a record label that specializes in Australian hip hop music and is based in Stirling, South Australia, Australia. The label was founded in 2008 by South Australian hip hop trio Hilltop Hoods. Joseph Lardner, better known by the stage name Vents and also known as Vents One, Vents 1 and Vents Uno, is an Australian hip hop artist from Adelaide, South Australia. He has released two albums, 2007's ''Hard to Kill'' and 2011's ''Marked for Death''. The latter was nominated for an ARIA Music Award. Early life Joseph Lardner was born in Adelaide in 1983 and left university placements on two occasions without completion. ''Who's Your Step Daddy'' is the debut album released by Australian hip hop group Funkoars in 2003. The album was released by Peepshow Entertainment and distributed by Obese Records. The album contains numerous pornographic references and their outrageous and passionate lyrics are potentially aimed at confronting or offending listeners. Following its release promoters started approaching Funkoars to book them for live performances, resulting in the group extensively touring Australia for three years before releasing a second album in 2006. The Greatest Hits is the second album released by Australian hip hop group Funkoars. It was released by Obese Records on 17 July 2006. Central Station states that the album "'captures the reckless spirit' of a band ll known for their passionate and outrageous lyrics (if somewhat unconventional), onstage antics and energy". Hilltop Hoods
Hilltop Hoods is an Australian hip hop group that formed in 1996 in Blackwood, Adelaide, South Australia. They are regarded as pioneers of the "larrikin-like" style of Australian hip hop. The group was founded by Suffa (Matthew David Lambert) and Pressure (Daniel Howe Smith), who were joined by DJ Debris (Barry John M. Daniel Rankine (born 24 May 1983), known professionally as Trials, is an Indigenous Australian rapper, songwriter, and record producer hailing from Adelaide, South Australia. In 2020, he signed to Island Records Australia and Universal Music Australia to release his debut solo album. Trials' work includes collaborations, co-writes and production of tracks with a range of artists and genres including Drapht, Gurrumul, Archie Roach, Hilltop Hoods, Pete Murray, Seth Sentry, Illy, DZ Deathrays, Paul Kelly, Thelma Plum, Mo’Ju and Dune Rats. Obese Records was a record label that released music from the Australian hip hop genre. It was the largest Australian independent hip hop label, including performers Pegz, Thundamentals and Dialectrix. Obese Records also operated two retail stores in Melbourne, a record distribution company, a soul imprint named Plethora Records, and operates the artists' management and touring company Obese Records Artist Management. History Founding as OB's record store Obese Records was founded in 1995 as a small record store called OB's by Ollie Bobbitt, in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran. Tirren Staaf, otherwise known as Pegz (or MC Pegasus), is an Australian hip hop artist and producer hailing from Melbourne, Victoria. He was the CEO of Obese Records—the record label responsible for artists such as Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, and Bias B. Biography Tirren Staaf has said that he was named after Tiran Porter, former member of the Doobie Brothers.
