The population was 1,495 at the 2000 census. Within the town of Fulton are the hamlets of Breakabeen and Fultonham. The town is in the center of the county and is also one of the larger towns in the county. Fulton is west of Albany. History The territory was in the realm of the Mohawk tribe. The town was first settled around 1715 after being purchased directly from local natives. Part of the early town was called Vroomansland after Adam Vrooman, the landowner. However, other settlers of German extraction, desiring the same land, fomented trouble with the natives. Fulton was established from part of the Town of Middleburgh in 1828. Fulton County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. It forms part of the state's Mohawk Valley region. Its county seat is Johnstown. At the 2020 U.S. census, the county had a population of 53,324. The county is named in honor of Robert Fulton, who is widely credited with developing the first commercially successful steamboat. Fulton County comprises the Gloversville micropolitan statistical area, which is included in the Capital District. History In 1838, Fulton County was split off from Montgomery, shortly after the Montgomery county seat was moved to Fonda, New York. The creation of Fulton County was engineered by Johnstown lawyer Daniel Cady, whose wife was a cousin of Robert Fulton.
