Fulford Golf Club
Fulford Golf Club is a private golf club located approximately south of York, England. It was founded in 1906, moving to its current site, which had been approved by James Braid, in 1935. The golf course was designed by Charles MacKenzie, brother of notable golf course architect Alister MacKenzie. Fulford was home to several PGA European Tour events including the Benson and Hedges International Open between 1971 and 1989. Memorably, during the 1981 tournament, Bernhard Langer climbed the tree by the 17th green to play his third shot. The club also hosted the Martini International in 1967, the Sun Alliance European Matchplay Championship in 1979 and the Murphy's Cup in 1990 and 1991. Fulford, North Yorkshire
Fulford is a historic village and civil parish on the outskirts of York, in the York district, in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. to the south of the city, on the east bank of the River Ouse, it was the site of the Battle of Fulford won by the invading Vikings in 1066, a precursor to the nearby Battle of Stamford Bridge lost by the Vikings, and then the Battle of Hastings in Sussex won by the invading Normans in the following weeks. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 2,785. Martini International
The Martini International was a men's professional golf tournament that was held from 1961 to 1983. It was hosted by several different golf clubs in England, Scotland and Wales. It was part of the British PGA tournament circuit, which evolved into the European Tour, and as such is recognised as an official European Tour event from 1972. The winners included the major champions Peter Thomson, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros. In 1983 the prize fund was £80,308, which was mid-range for a European Tour event at the time. The tournament was sponsored by beverage company Martini & Rossi. The 1971 Martini International saw a rare event, when John Hudson scored two successive holes-in-one during his second round at the Royal Norwich Golf Club. Girls Amateur Championship
The Girls Amateur Championship is a golf tournament held annually in the United Kingdom. Girls need to be under 18 on 1 January in the year of the championship. Until World War II the championship was organised by a series of magazines and always held at Stoke Poges Golf Club near Slough. it was first held in 1919, although an event was planned in 1914 but was cancelled because of the start of World War I. After World War II it restarted in 1949 when the Ladies Golf Union took over the event. It is now run by The R&A, following the merger with the Ladies Golf Union in 2017.. Carris Trophy
The Carris Trophy is the English Boys Under 18 Open Amateur Stroke-Play Championship. It was founded in 1935. History The event was founded as a boys' golf tournament in 1935 at the Moor Park Golf Club by Austin Carris. The competition was adopted in 1988 by the English Golf Union as the English Boys Under 18 Open Amateur Stroke-Play Championship. It is now played at various venues around England, but returns to Moor Park at five year intervals reflecting the inauguration of the trophy at this course. The Girls U16 Amateur Championship is a golf tournament for girls under 16 which is held annually in the United Kingdom. The competition is organised and run by The R&A. History In 2018 the tournament replaced the Ladies' British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship which was discontinued by The R&A in 2017 following the Ladies' Golf Union merger. It had been played since 1969. The inaugural championship took place at Fulford Golf Club near York in 2018, the venue that also hosted the inaugural Women's British Open in 1976. European Ladies' Team Championship
The European Ladies' Team Championship is a European amateur team golf championship for women organised by the European Golf Association. The inaugural event was held in 1959. It was played in odd-numbered years from 1959 to 2007 and has been played annually since 2008 (with the exception of 2012). Format Currently, the championship is contested by up to 20 teams, each of 6 players. The format consists of two rounds of strokeplay, out of which the five lowest scores from each team's six players will count each day. The total addition of the five lowest scores will constitute the team's score and determine the teams qualified for the last three rounds of matchplay. Jenny Lee Smith
Jennifer Constance Lee Smith (born 2 December 1948) is an English golfer, known for winning the inaugural Women's British Open in 1976 at Fulford Golf Club, York, England and later winning the Order of Merit on the Women's Professional Golf Association tour (now Ladies European Tour) in 1981 and 1982. Lee-Smith was born and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne and started playing golf at a relatively young age. After some success in regional tournaments in the late 1960s and early 1970s, she began to play in international tournaments. She was a member of the Great Britain Curtis Cup team in both 1974 and 1976, represented England in the 1975 European Team Championships, and played for Great Britain & Ireland in the 1976 Espirito Santo Trophy. The Murphy's Cup was a golf tournament on the European Tour from 1989 to 1991. In its inaugural year it was held opposite the PLM Open The PLM Open was a golf tournament that was played in Sweden until 1990. Founded in 1983, it was a European Tour event from 1986, and in its final year it had a prize fund of £350,000, which was mid-range for a European Tour event at that time. The British PGA Matchplay Championship was a match play golf tournament that began in 1903 and ran until 1979. Between 1903 and 1969, the event was sponsored by the now defunct British newspaper the ''News of the World'', and was commonly known by the paper's name. Initially organised as the championship of British professionals, the event came to include invited players from other countries – in particular from around the Commonwealth (it was won on four occasions by Australia's Peter Thomson, a record number of victories shared with Dai Rees and James Braid). Bernhard Langer (; born 27 August 1957) is a German professional golfer. He is a two-time Masters champion and was one of the world's leading golfers throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1986, he became the sport's first official number one ranked player following the creation of the OWGR.
