This album was the soundtrack for a traveling independent film and has the distinction of containing the first official release from Crooked Fingers, ''Sleep for Sale''. This compilation was released by Arena Rock Recording Co. in 1997 and is now out of print. Arena Rock Recording Company ("Arena Rock" or "ARRCO") is an independent record label based in Portland, Oregon. Albums are distributed by Redeye in the United States and Koch Entertainment Canada, Koch in Canada. Arena Rock was formed in 1995 in Brooklyn, New York, by Greg Glover and Dan Ralph as a hobby label. Glover later began working on the label full-time after leaving London Records. In 2004, Arena Rock moved to Portland, Oregon. Harvey Danger
Harvey Danger was an American alternative rock band that was formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1992 by journalism students at the University of Washington. The band rose to prominence in 1997 with the single "Flagpole Sitta", which was later used as the theme tune to the British sitcom ''Peep Show''. After recording two albums, they went on hiatus for a few years and returned with their third and final release in 2005. On August 29, 2009, the band played its final show at the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle. History Early years (1992–1996) Harvey Danger began in 1992 with University of Washington classmates Jeff Lin and Aaron Huffman deciding "it might be fun to start a band." The Softies
The Softies were a musical duo consisting of Rose Melberg and Jen Sbragia, who are known for their minimal approach to pop music. History Beginning in 1994, the band was intended to be a side project for both artists. Along with an eventual career as a solo artist, Rose Melberg performed with Tiger Trap, Gaze, and Go Sailor. Jen Sbragia was known for her work with the band Pretty Face. As part of the Twee Pop movement centrally located in the Pacific Northwest, they were able to meet at performances for their respective bands. The two derived their name from a UK new wave group. After Tiger Trap disbanded in January 1994, the pair formed The Softies and recorded the four-song “Love Seat” 7-inch single for Slumberland Records. Elf Power
Elf Power is an American indie rock band that originated in Athens, Georgia, United States. The line-up consists of guitarist/vocalist Andrew Rieger, keyboardist Laura Carter, guitarist Dave Wrathgabar, bassist Bryan Poole, and drummer Peter Alvanos. They are part of the Elephant Six Collective. History The band began as a four-track recording project of Rieger, Carter, Raleigh Hatfield and Dave Wrathgabar, later of Fablefactory. These recording sessions eventually resulted in the first incarnation of their debut album ''Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs''. The band's line-up expanded when Rieger and Carter recruited Elephant Six musician Bryan Poole, also known as The Late B.P. Helium. While the band occasionally played live shows and continued to record, Poole chiefly stayed in Athens to continue work with Of Montreal while Rieger and Carter moved to New York City. Home (American Band)
Home is an experimental pop band formed in Tampa, Florida in the early-1990s, before relocating to New York in 1996. The band released eight self-produced, sequentially numbered, ultra-low-distribution albums on cheap Radio Shack cassettes before signing to Sony's Relativity Records label, which distributed its ninth album (appropriately titled ''IX'') in 1995. This album, Home's only release on a major label, received favorable reviews in publications such as '' Spin'', ''The Village Voice'' and ''Magnet''. Subsequent Home albums have appeared on independent record labels, also to generally positive reviews. Dave Fridmann of The Flaming Lips was the producer behind at least two of Home's albums. Though Home was originally regarded as a lo-fi band due to its primitive recording techniques, its releases starting with ''IX'' have largely featured a cleaner sound highlighted by guitars and various electronic keyboards. Longstocking
Longstocking were an America, Los Angeles-based queercore-punk band. Formed in 1995 by singer and guitarist Tamala Poljak, the group had originally been a guitar and drums duo with Poljak and drummer, Kevin Hair. Tamala had previously been in the bands Oiler and Fleabag. The group released several singles, including a split single with Team Dresch on Sub Pop, before disbanded in 1997, just after the release of their debut album, ''Once Upon A Time Called Now''. After the band had broken up, one of Longstocking's songs was featured on the soundtrack of the film ''Fuel'' and was included on the '' Fuel Soundtrack'' CD, released in 1998. Helium (band)
Helium was an American alternative rock band fronted by Mary Timony. The band formed during the summer of 1992. Between 1992 and 1997, they released two full-length albums, three EPs and several singles. History Under the original moniker of "Chupa," the band's founding members were Mary Lou Lord; Jason Hatfield, Juliana Hatfield's brother; Shawn King Devlin; and Brian Dunton. Devlin and Dunton were both also in the band Dumptruck before founding Helium. Mary Timony, formerly of the band Autoclave, replaced Mary Lou Lord on vocals and guitar shortly after formation, as Lord was reluctant to use electric instrumentation. Following Lord's departure, the remaining members changed the band's name to Helium. Timony was known for her husky, vibrato-less and monotone singing style. The band's record label, Matador Records, likened Timony's vocals to Kim Wilde and Debbie Harry. Haywood (band)
Haywood was an indie rock quartet from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Brooklyn, New York that was active from 1992 to 2000. They have been compared to Superchunk and Modest Mouse. While the band achieved only modest success in their eight years together, their third album ''We Are Amateurs, You and I'' was well reviewed, receiving an 8.2 rating on Pitchfork and praises from John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats. The release is regarded as the album which could have kick-started Haywood's rise to fame, had they not coincided the release with the announcement that the band had split up.
