Giovanni Valetti
Giovanni Valetti (22 September 1913 – 28 May 1998) was an Italian professional road bicycle racing, road racing cyclist. The highlights of his career were his two overall wins in the 1938 Giro d'Italia, 1938 and 1939 Giro d'Italia, 1939 Giro d'Italia. He also won the 1938 Tour de Suisse. General Classification In The Giro D'Italia
The general classification in the Giro d'Italia is the most important classification of the Giro d'Italia, which determines who is the overall winner. It is therefore considered more important than secondary classifications as the points classification or the mountains classification. Since 1931, the leader of the general classification is identified by a pink jersey ( it, maglia rosa ). Prior to that year and since the creation of the race, no colour was used to distinguish the winner at the top of the classification. The first rider to wear the maglia rosa was Learco Guerra following the first stage of the 1931 Giro d'Italia. The first jersey was entirely pink and made from wool. It had a roll-neck collar and front pockets. As Italy was under Fascist Party rule there was a gray shield stitched onto the shirt, a symbol for the party. The 1938 Giro d'Italia was the 26th edition of the Giro d'Italia, organized and sponsored by the newspaper ''La Gazzetta dello Sport''. The race began on 7 May in Milan with a stage that stretched to Turin, finishing back in Milan on 29 May after a split stage and a total distance covered of . The race began on 28 April in Milan with a stage that stretched to Turin, finishing back in Milan on 18 May after a split stage and a total distance covered of . The race was won by the Italian rider Giovanni Valetti of the Fréjus team, with fellow Italians Gino Bartali and Mario Vicini coming in second and third respectively.
