Denton is a city in and the county seat of Denton County, Texas, United States. With a population of 139,869 as of 2020, it is the 27th-most populous city in Texas, the 197th-most populous city in the United States, and the 12th-most populous city in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. A Texas land grant led to the formation of Denton County in 1846, and the city was incorporated in 1866. Both were named after pioneer and Texas militia captain John B. Denton. The arrival of a railroad line in the city in 1881 spurred population, and the establishment of the University of North Texas in 1890 and Texas Woman's University in 1901 distinguished the city from neighboring regions. After the construction of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport finished in 1974, the city had more rapid growth; as of 2011, Denton was the seventh-fastest growing city with a population over 100,000 in the country. Fry Street Fire
On June 27, 2007 the Historic Fry Street area of Denton, Texas was burned down. The area referred to as "Fry Street" is the area between Fry St/Welch St and Oak St/Hickory St. The Tomato, a local pizza place frequented by University of North Texas and Texas Womans University students, was the primary target damaged by the fire but the entire block was demolished by police and firefighters before the next morning. The fire took place the day before the scheduled date for the building's demolition. The area had been at the center of a contentious battle between Save Fry Street and United Equities Inc. Background Houston based developer United Equities Inc. bought most of the commercial lots on and around Fry Street, with plans to raze them in exchange for "upscale" businesses. Fry Street Quartet
The Fry Street Quartet (FSQ) is an American string quartet in residence at the Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University. They perform at festivals and venues around the world, earning numerous awards in the process. The Fry Street Quartet formed In 1997, naming itself after their first rehearsal space in Chicago. Fry Street's list of accomplishments includes the Millennium Grand Prize at the 2000 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, Fischoff Competition, the largest chamber music competition in the world. The quartet debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2001, and has won awards at the Yellow Springs Competition and the Banff International String Quartet Competition, among others. They were hailed by ''The New York Times'' as "a triumph of ensemble playing." When not traveling, each member of the quartet teaches full-time in the strings program at Utah State University.
