Fruitmarket Gallery
The Fruitmarket Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since its opening in 1974, the gallery has become part of the Scottish contemporary art scene. After a period of closure to undergo a significant renovation, the gallery reopened in 2021 with expanded exhibition space and facilities. History The gallery, which opened in 1974, is located in a building which was originally built as a fruit and vegetable market in 1938. In 1994, the building was renovated by Richard Murphy Architects. It has a café and a bookshop. In 2011 the gallery was involved in commissioning The Scotsman Steps. These 104 steps which link Waverley Station to North Bridge were opened in 1899. They were redesigned by artist Martin Creed (as ''Work No. 1059'') to incorporate a different type of marble for each step in 2011. Karla Black
Karla Black (born 1972) is a Scottish sculptor who creates abstract three-dimensional artworks that explore the physicality of materials as a way of understanding and communicating the world around us. In 2011, Black was nominated for the Turner Prize and also represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale. Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Kestnergesellschaft in Hanover, Germany; the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia; the Gemeentemuseum, The Hague; the Dallas Museum of Art; and the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, Modern Art Oxford and Kunsthalle Nurnberg, Germany. Contemporary history, in English-language historiography, is a subset of modern history that describes the historical period from approximately 1945 to the present. Emma Hart (artist)
Emma Hart (born 1974) is an English artist who works in a number of disciplines, including video art, installation art, sculpture, and film. She lives and works in London, where she is a lecturer at Slade School of Art. In 2016, she was the winner of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women. Early life and education Hart studied Fine Art at Slade School of Fine Art, graduating with an MA in 2004, and completed a PhD in Fine Art in 2013 from Kingston University. Career Hart's art has been exhibited both in traditional gallery spaces and unconventional spaces such as "a semi-derelict flat above an abandoned frame-maker's shop" in Folkestone, as part of the 2014 Folkestone Triennial. Her artwork addresses questions of social class, familial behaviour, and the connections between relatives. Lucy Skaer
Lucy Skaer (born 1975) is a contemporary English artist who works with sculpture, film, painting, and drawing. Her work has been exhibited internationally. Skaer is a member of the Henry VIII’s Wives artist collective, and has exhibited a number of works with the group. She currently lives and works in Glasgow and London. Early life and education Skaer was born in Cambridge. She studied Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art. Work Lucy Skaer's works often depicts relationships between abstraction and the direct material nature of objects. Many of her works are replicas of historical objects which are translated and re-contextualized in new mediums. Louise Hopkins
Louise Hopkins (born 1965) is a British contemporary artist and painter who lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland. Biography Hopkins was born in Hertfordshire, England and completed the Foundations Studies course at Brighton Polytechnic from 1984 to 1985. She studied fine art at Newcastle Polytechnic between 1985 and 1988, graduating with a B.A.(Hons). For a time, after graduating from Newcastle Polytechnic, she lived and worked in Australia, where she also exhibited. After a two-year course she graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a master's degree in 1994. Hopkins quickly gained recognition in Glasgow and London after graduating in 1994. Nathan Coley
Nathan Coley (born 1967 in Glasgow, Scotland, where he currently lives and works) is a contemporary British artist who was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2007 and has held both solo and group exhibitions internationally, as well as his work being owned by both private and public collections worldwide. He studied Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art between 1985 and 1989 with the artists Christine Borland, Ross Sinclair and Douglas Gordon amongst others. The use of found phrases and objects in Coley's work is explained by Tim Hunt, he states that Coley's isolation of these words: "relieves them of specific historical reality and relieves them of a specific historical reality and returns them as representations pitched between aphorism and haiku." Christine Borland
Christine Borland (born 1965) is a Scottish artist. Born in Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland, Borland is one of the Young British Artists (YBAs) and was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1997 (won by Gillian Wearing) for her work ''From Life'' at Tramway, Glasgow. Borland works and lives in Kilcreggan, Argyll, as a BALTIC Professor at the BxNU Institute of Contemporary Art. Borland studied Environmental Art at the Glasgow School of Art and later was awarded an MA from the University of Ulster in 1988. She was on the committee of Transmission Gallery, Glasgow from 1989 to 1991. In 2004, she became one of five artist awarded the prestigious Glenfiddich Artist in Residence programme. Roman Signer
Roman Signer (born 1938 in Appenzell, Switzerland) is principally a visual artist who works in sculpture, art installations photography, and video. Early life and career Born in Appenzell, Switzerland, Signer started his career as an artist later in life at the age of 28, after working as an architect’s draughtsman, a radio engineer apprentice, and a short stint in a pressure cooker factory. He holds degrees from arts institutions in Switzerland and Poland. He studied at the Schule für Gestaltung in Zurich and Lucerne between 1966 and 1971. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Poland from 1971-1972. Alex Hartley (artist)
Alex Hartley (born 1963) is a British artist whose work addresses complicated and sometimes contradictory attitudes toward built environments and landscapes. Career Hartley's artwork was exhibited in Charles Saatchi's ''Sensation.'' With Black Dog Publishing, he produced the architecture/climbing crossover book ''L.A Climbs'' in 2004, and the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh published a monograph, ''Not Part of Your World'' to coincide with his solo festival exhibition in 2008. Cai Guo-Qiang
Cai Guo-Qiang (; born 8 December 1957) is a Chinese artist who currently lives and works in New York City and New Jersey. Biography Cai Guo-Qiang was born in 1957 in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China. His father, Cai Ruiqin, was a calligrapher and traditional painter who worked in a bookstore. As a result, Cai Guo-Qiang was exposed early on to Western literature as well as traditional Chinese art forms. As an adolescent and teenager, Cai witnessed the social effects of the Cultural Revolution first-hand, personally participating in demonstrations and parades himself. He grew up in a setting where explosions were common, whether they were the result of cannon blasts or celebratory fireworks.
