A fronton ( es, frontón; eu, frontoi or ; french: fronton) is a two-walled or single-walled court used as a playing area for Basque pelota. History The front wall of the first frontons in villages was usually the wall of a church. Because the games being played close by, several priests would play pelota along with the villagers and got to be well-known players and often served as referees in provincial or town competitions but were out of the picture when it turned into a commercialized sport. Because of the increasing popularity of the game, many churches put up signs forbidding pelota games on their porches. The games were also played in town halls, but when the game turned into a highly popular entertainment in the region, towns started to build special frontons in open-air or closed courts. Fronton is a census-designated place (CDP) in Starr County, Texas, United States, bordering the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, close to Ciudad Miguel Alemán. The population was 180 at the 2010 census down from 599 at the 2000 census. Geography Fronton is located at (26.425856, -99.076206). Prior to the 2010 census, Fronton CDP had parts taken to form new CDPs, and lost additional area. As a result, the total area was reduced to 0.2 square miles (0.5 km2), all land. Demographics At the 2000 census, there were 599 people, 176 households and 152 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 139 per square mile (54/km2). There were 218 housing units at an average density of 51/sq mi (20/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 91% White, 7.0% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Paleta Frontón
Paleta frontón is a Peruvian sport that was born in the capital, Lima, in 1945. This sport has its roots in the " pelota vasca" brought by the Spanish settlers, and the domestic "pelota mano", called "handball" at that time due to English influence. The sport is similar to squash but is played on an open court. A wooden, carbon fiber or glass fiber paddle and a black rubber ball are required to play paleta frontón. The paddle is made from Peruvian oak typically logged near water based townships. The fronton court consists of a playing field and a concrete wall which is placed in front of the playing area. The concrete wall is high by wide. The court is long and wide. There are lines on the court limiting the play area and marking the reception zones, similar to tennis. El Frontón
El Frontón is a deserted island and former penal colony off the coast of Callao, Peru. Geography Dry, deserted and without vegetation, it is located 7 km from the coast, to the west of La Punta District and to the southeast of San Lorenzo Island. It has an approximate area of 1 km² and is frequented by marine animals such as sea lions and the Humboldt penguin. History From its viceregal era up until the early 19th century, the island was inhabited only by pirates and privateers, and was also known by the nickname of Dead Man's Island ( es, La Isla del Muerto). Prison The island became a penal colony in the early 19th century, starting in 1917, under president José Pardo's second administration.
