From Afar (film)
''From Afar'' ( es, Desde allá) is a 2015 Venezuelan drama film directed by Lorenzo Vigas and written by Vigas and Guillermo Arriaga. It won the Golden Lion at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival. It was selected as the Venezuelan entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards but it was not nominated. The film is about Armando, a wealthy middle-aged man who gets involved with Élder, a young man from a street gang. Lorenzo Vigas
Lorenzo Vigas Castes (born 1967) is a Venezuelan director, screenwriter and film producer. Biography Education Born in Mérida, the son of the painter Oswaldo Vigas, Vigas graduated in molecular biology at the University of Tampa. In 1995 he studied cinema at New York University and started directing several experimental films. Career Back in Venezuela in 1998, he directed the RCTV documentary series ''Expedición'' and various documentaries and commercials. Located in Mexico, in 2003 he directed the short film ''Los elefantes nunca olvidan'' (''Elephants Never Forget''), produced by Guillermo Arriaga and presented at the Cannes Film Festival. Venezuela has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film since 1978. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. Venezuela has had thirty-one films accepted by AMPAS for Oscar consideration, but none have yet been nominated for an Academy Award. However, in 2014 the official submission '' The Liberator'' was included in the January shortlist along with nine other foreign submissions. In 2005, their official submission, '' 1888: El Extraordinario Viaje de Santa Isabel'', did not arrive in time due to a dispute with a rival film, '' Secuestro Express''. This is a list of submissions to the 89th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the Academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The Foreign Language Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. The submitted motion pictures must be first released theatrically in their respective countries between 1 October 2015 and 30 September 2016. The deadline for submissions was 3 October 2016, with the Academy announcing a list of eligible films on 11 October. Zagreb Film Festival (ZFF) is an annual film festival held since 2003 in Zagreb, Croatia. Focusing on promoting young and upcoming filmmaker, the festival is widely considered to be one of the most important and influential cultural events in Croatia. 2015 Venice Film Festival
The 72nd annual Venice International Film Festival took place from 2 to 12 September 2015. Alfonso Cuarón served as the President of the Jury for the main competition. A restored version of Federico Fellini's film '' Amarcord'' was shown at the festival. The Venezuelan film '' From Afar'' by Lorenzo Vigas won the Golden Lion award.
