Fritz originated as a German nickname for Friedrich, or Frederick (''Der Alte Fritz'', and ''Stary Fryc'' were common nicknames for King Frederick II of Prussia and Frederick III, German Emperor) as well as for similar names including Fridolin and, less commonly, Francis. Francis Daniel Barzilauskas (June 13, 1920 – November 30, 1990) was an American football guard who played four seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Boston Yanks/New York Bulldogs and New York Giants. He was drafted by the Yanks with the third overall pick in the 1947 NFL Draft. He first enrolled at the College of the Holy Cross before transferring to Yale University. Willie Fritz (born April 2, 1960) is an American football coach and former player. He is the head football coach at Tulane. Fritz served as the head football coach at University of Central Missouri from 1997 to 2009, Sam Houston State University from 2010 to 2013, and Georgia Southern University from 2014 to 2015. From 1993 to 1996, he was the head football coach at Blinn College, a junior college in Brenham, Texas, where he led his teams to consecutive NJCAA National Football Championships, in 1995 and 1996. William Harold Fritz
William Harold Fritz (born Aug. 24, 1928, died June 9, 2009) was a geologist who worked for the Geological Survey of Canada. He is known for his work in stratigraphy and on olenelloid trilobites. Biography Fritz was born in Cathlamet, Washington, where his father practised medicine for over 50 years. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1946. After Air Force service during the Korean War, he completed his PhD in Geology at the University of Washington in 1960. He first worked for the Shell Oil Company in Alaska, then in 1964 he moved to Canada taking up a position as a research geologist with the Geological Survey. After retiring he and his wife Judie carried out geological work in Nevada. They had one son, Peter. Geological Work Fritz's work focussed mostly on the Cambrian period. Taylor Harry Fritz (born October 28, 1997) is an American professional tennis player. Reinhold Fritz (16 March 1884 – 30 October 1950) was a German operatic bass-baritone. He was engaged at the Stuttgart Court Opera for 25 years and was awarded the title Kammersänger. He performed a broad repertoire of both serious and comic roles, and participated in world premieres including the first version of ''Ariadne auf Naxos'' by Richard Strauss, Siegfried Wagner's '' An allem ist Hütchen schuld!'' and Hindemith's ''Das Nusch-Nuschi''. Madeleine Alberta Fritz (3 November 1896 – 20 August 1990) was a Canadian palaeontologist. She was a professor at the University of Toronto, where she taught vertebrate studies in the department of Geology. Fritz's writing on the fossil Bryozoa along with her research on the stratigraphy of Toronto and the surrounding areas were major contributions to the geological field. Fritz was one of the pioneering researchers on the Palaeozoic fossil Bryozoa, which is a type of sea creature that bonds together and builds joint skeletons composed of tiny chambers or tubes. Her work on these creatures later lead to her being called the “great-grandmother of Palaeozoic Bryozoa". Her scientific journals on these extinct marine invertebrates are internationally acclaimed.
