Frimangron
Centrum is a resort in Suriname, located in the Paramaribo District. Its population at the 2012 census was 20,631. The historical centre of Paramaribo is located within the resort. The city centre is mainly in original condition, contains 291 listed monuments, and has of 2002 been designated a Unesco World Heritage Site. History Paramaribo was founded in 1613 by Stoffel Albertszoon near the indigenous village Parmurbo. Around 1665, during the British occupation, the village was expanded and quickly outranked the earlier settlement of Torarica. The historical centre dates from the 17th and 18th century, and is mainly composed of wooden houses in a plain and symmetrical style, and the street are set in a grid structure. The reason for using wood was that the absence of stone in the vicinity, and the clay was not suitable for bricks. Resorts Of Suriname
The ten districts of Suriname are divided into 63 resorts (Dutch: ''ressorten''). Within the capital city of Paramaribo, a resort entails a neighbourhood; in other cases it is more akin to a municipality, consisting of a central place with a few settlements around it. The resorts in the Sipaliwini District are especially large, since the interior of Suriname is sparsely inhabited. The average resort is about and has almost 8,000 inhabitants. A freedman or freedwoman is a formerly enslaved person who has been released from slavery, usually by legal means. Historically, enslaved people were freed by manumission (granted freedom by their captor-owners), emancipation (granted freedom as part of a larger group), or self-purchase. Mosque Keizerstraat
The Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at Islam Mosque Keizerstraat () is the headquarters of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement for the Propagation of Islam in Paramaribo in Suriname, the Surinaamse Islamitische Vereniging (SIV). The mosque is located in the Keizerstraat, adjacent to the Neveh Shalom Synagogue. History The Muslim community of Paramaribo was established in 1929. Neveh Shalom Synagogue
The Neveh Shalom Synagogue ( he, בית הכנסת נווה שלום, lit. ''House of Peace'') is the only synagogue of the Ashkenazi community in Suriname. History The lot on Keizerstraat 82 was acquired in 1716 by Sephardi Jews. The original building was completed in 1723. The first Surinamese synagogue was located in the Jodensavanne, originally built of wood between 1665 and 1671 (but already rebuilt with bricks), however many had moved to Paramaribo. Keizerstraat
The Keizerstraat is a long street in the center of Paramaribo, best known for its Neveh Shalom Synagogue and Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at Islam Mosque that are adjacent to each other. This proximity is often perceived to symbolize the peaceful coexistence of religious communities in Suriname. The Keizerstraat is predominantly commercial near the Suriname River, turning more residential as one advances to the north east, changing its name in Verlengde Keizerstraat (Extended Keizerstraat), before ending near a cluster of cemeteries. Suriname River
The Suriname River (Dutch: ''Surinamerivier'') is 480 km long and flows through the country Suriname. Its sources are located in the Guiana Highlands on the border between the Wilhelmina Mountains and the Eilerts de Haan Mountains (where it is known as the Gran Rio). The river flows below the reservoir along Brokopondo, Berg en Dal, the migrant communities Klaaskreek and Nieuw-Lombé, Jodensavanne, Carolina, Ornamibo and Domburg, before reaching the capital Paramaribo on the left bank and Meerzorg on the right bank. At Nieuw-Amsterdam it is joined by the Commewijne and immediately thereafter at the sandspit Braamspunt it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The Presidential Palace of Suriname (Dutch: Presidentieel paleis van de Republiek Suriname) is the presidential palace of Suriname in the capital of Paramaribo. The Onafhankelijkheidsplein (, Independence Square) is a town square in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. The square is situated in the historical inner city, near the Suriname River and the Presidential Palace of Suriname. Before the independence of Suriname from the Netherlands in 1975, it was also called the ''Oranjeplein'' (Orange Square) and the ''Gouvernementsplein'' (Government Square). The Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul also called Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral (Dutch: ''Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskathedraal'') is a wooden Roman Catholic cathedral located in the centre of the capital city of Paramaribo, Suriname. The Catholic congregation in the city originally used a church adapted in 1826 from a Dutch Jewish theatre built in 1809. As the years passed, the church became too small for the growing number of Catholics in the city. In 1882 the diocese decided to build the cathedral. It was consecrated in 1885, but the towers were not completed until 1901. A major restoration was completed in 2010 and the cathedral was re-opened.
