Friesian (chicken)
The Friesian or Frisian, nl, , is an ancient Dutch breed of chicken. It originates in Friesland, on the North Sea coast of the northern Netherlands. History The Friesian originated in Friesland in northern Holland, and is thought to be an ancient breed. It is apparently related to other breeds in the area such as the Assendelfts Hoen, the Drentse Hoen, the Groninger Meeuw, the Hollands Hoen, the Ostfriesische Möwe and the Westfälischer Totleger. The earliest written description may be that by R. Houwink in his ''Overzicht van alle bekende hoenderrassen, in hunne vormen en kleuren'' of 1909. From the early twentieth century the Friesian was supplanted as an egg-layer by more productive breeds such as the Barnevelder, the Leghorn, the Rhode Island Red and the Welsumer. Barnevelder
The Barnevelder is a Dutch breed of domestic chicken. It resulted from cross-breeding between local Dutch chickens and various "Shanghai" birds imported from Asia to Europe in the later part of the nineteenth century; these may have been of Brahma, Cochin or Croad Langshan type. It is named for the town and ''gemeente'' (municipality) of Barneveld, in Gelderland in the central Netherlands. The hens are good layers of large brown eggs and, unlike some other breeds, continue to lay well during winter. History In the 1850s Asian chickens began to arrive in Europe, where they were at first known as "Shanghai" chickens. Comb (anatomy)
A comb is a fleshy growth or crest on the top of the head of some gallinaceous birds, such as domestic chickens. The alternative name cockscomb (with several spelling variations) reflects the fact that combs are generally larger on cock birds than on hens. The comb is one of several fleshy protuberances on the heads of chickens, the others being the wattles and earlobes, which collectively are called caruncles. In turkeys, the caruncles are the fleshy nodules on the head and throat. Chicken combs are most commonly red, but may also be black or dark purple in breeds such as the Silkie or the Sebright. A bantam is any small variety of fowl, usually of chicken or domestic duck, duck. Welsumer
The Welsummer or Welsumer is a Dutch breed of domestic chicken. It originates in the small village of Welsum, in the eastern Netherlands. It was bred at the beginning of the twentieth century from local fowls of mixed origin: Rhode Island Reds, Barnevelders, Partridge Leghorns, Cochins, and Wyandottes. In 1922–23, steps were taken to fix a standard after the birds began to show a good deal of uniformity. The eggs were originally exported for the commercial egg trade. Some stock was exported to the United Kingdom, and the breed was added to the British Standard in 1930. The Rhode Island Red is an American breed of domestic chicken. It is the state bird of Rhode Island. It was developed there and in Massachusetts in the late nineteenth century, by cross-breeding birds of Oriental origin such as the Malay with brown Leghorn birds from Italy. It was a dual-purpose breed, raised both for meat and for eggs; modern strains have been bred for their egg-laying abilities. Westfälischer Totleger
The is a German breed of domestic chicken. It is more than 400 years old, and is a rare breed. History The Totleger derives from the traditional rural chickens of Westphalia, and was reared mainly in the area of the cities of Bielefeld and Herford. It is closely related to the Ostfriesische Möwe and to the Braekel. Although the German word means "dead" and means "(egg-)layer", the real meaning is another. Due to the considerable ability to produce eggs, the breed was called "Alltagsleger" ("every-day layer") or "Dauerleger". Under the influence of Low German the name changed into "Doutleijer".
