Friends Of Seagate Inc.
Friends of ''Seagate'' Inc. was founded in the late 1980s by Kafi Benz as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Sarasota, Florida. The historic preservation group lead local efforts protect historic property in the Sarasota-Bradenton area from commercial development. The group later expanded its scope to include environmental conservation. Its most notable project was the preservation of Seagate, the former home of Cincinnati, Ohio, industrialist Powel Crosley Jr. and his wife, Gwendolyn, and its later owners, Mabel and Freeman Horton. (Horton was a civil engineer who proposed the construction of the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge across Tampa Bay.) In 2002 the organization tried to secure Rus-in- Ur'be, an undeveloped parcel of land in the center of the Indian Beach Sapphire Shores neighborhood, as a local park; however, as of 2014, real estate developers intend to build condominium units at the site. Kafi Benz
Kafi Benz (born 1941) is an American author and artist who began participation in social entrepreneurship through environmental preservation and regional planning in 1959 as a member of the ''Jersey Jetport Site Association'', which opposed plans by the Port of New York Authority, New York Port Authority to found a new airport in the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge#Wildlife Refuge Formation, Great Swamp, the central feature of a massive 55 square mile Drainage basin, watershed in New Jersey bounded to the south and east by the Watchung Mountains, 25 miles west of Manhattan. During the 1980s she also became very active in historic preservation, founding a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, Friends of Seagate Inc., for that purpose. The organization later was expanded to include concerns for additional areas in the arts and sciences. At the same time she founded the official web site of the sculptor Jim Gary. Lake Underwood
Lake Underwood (July 4, 1926 – September 12, 2008) was an American entrepreneur who competed as a champion in the racing of prototype automobiles and motorcycles. He was a master mechanic who, although high performance fuel delivery and carburetor design and mechanics were his specialties, also invented automobile improvements, especially in electronics for German automobiles. Underwood was one of the founders of the Watkins Glen Racing School where he taught racecar driving skills. He participated in the training of Paul Newman to drive race cars for the 1969 movie, ''Winning'', which sparked Newman's lifetime enthusiasm for the motorsport. He was an active member of many racing, road racing, and automobile related clubs, some of which he helped to found. He served as president for some of them. Porsche Club of America identified Underwood as one of four race car drivers who established Porsche as ''"the giant killer"'' in the early days of its racing in the United States. ...
