Friends Of Lulu
Friends of Lulu was a non-profit, national charitable organization in the United States, which operated from 1994–2011 to promote readership of comic books by women and the participation of women in the comic book industry. Membership was open to all persons. Friends of Lulu additionally sponsored the Lulu Awards and administered the Women Cartoonists Hall of Fame. The organization took its name from Little Lulu, the comic strip character created by Marjorie Henderson Buell in 1935. Trina Robbins
Trina Robbins (born Trina Perlson; August 17, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York) is an American cartoonist. She was an early participant in the underground comix movement, and one of the first female artists in that movement. In the 1980s, Robbins became the first woman to draw ''Wonder Woman'' comics. She is a member of the Will Eisner Hall of Fame. Career Early work Robbins was an active member of science fiction fandom in the 1950s and 1960s. Her illustrations appeared in science fiction fanzines like the Hugo- nominated ''Habakkuk''. Comics Robbins' first comics were printed in the '' East Village Other''; she also contributed to the spin-off underground comic '' Gothic Blimp Works''. Female Comics Creators
Although, traditionally, female comics creators have long been a minority in the industry, they have made a notable impact since the very beginning, and more and more female artists are getting recognition along with the maturing of the medium. Women creators have worked in every genre, from superheroes to romance, westerns to war, crime to horror. In certain countries, like Japan and South Korea, women creators have shaken up the traditional market and attained widespread mainstream success. Abby Denson is an American cartoonist, writer, and musician, known for her gay young-adult comics series ''Tough Love'' and her comics travel guides to Tokyo and Japan. Personal life Abby Denson was born in Illinois, but grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut. She received a degree in Cultural Studies from Eugene Lang College and a BFA in Illustration from Parsons School of Design. Kim Yale (November 22, 1953 – March 7, 1997) was an American writer and editor of comic books for several publishers including DC Comics, Eclipse Comics, First Comics, Marvel Comics, and WaRP Graphics. Biography Yale was born in Evanston, Illinois, to the Reverend Richard A. Yale and Theresa Yale. Her father was a Navy chaplain which meant that for many years she and her family moved to various locations in the United States and elsewhere before resettling in Evanston during her teen years. She earned a B.A. in English from Knox College.
